The TV show S.W.A.T., which was canceled for a third time this year, isn’t over yet. After its series finale aired in May, it was revealed that Sony Pictures Television had commissioned a 10-episode spinoff starring Shemar Moore. This news left some of the cast feeling displeased as they were uncertain if they would be involved. It remained unclear who might join Moore, whose character Hondo would head a new squad of recruits. Now, it’s thrilling to learn that two original stars will make an appearance in the premiere episode!
Sony has confirmed that Jay Harrington and Patrick St. Esprit will reappear as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay and Commander Robert Hicks in the debut of the series S.W.A.T. Exiles. Both actors played these characters for all eight seasons in the original show. However, the details about their roles in the new series and whether they will appear in additional episodes have yet to be revealed. Nonetheless, the return of Deacon and Hicks is certainly cause for celebration.

Initially, even as a fan of S.W.A.T., I had my doubts when the spinoff was introduced. News of Moore’s involvement certainly piqued my interest, but it was unfortunate to learn that the “family” known as 20-Squad would be separated. The rumors about behind-the-scenes drama within BTS were also unsettling.
I can’t help but admit that I’m thrilled about S.W.A.T.’s return, although it might sound dishonest. Initially, I was unsure due to the new cast members, but learning that Harrington and Esprit are rejoining the team has definitely boosted my enthusiasm. Their presence will provide a link to the original series in this spinoff, which is reassuring. This could also mean that other long-time franchise actors might make a return as well.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve been following the buzz around the recent guest appearances announced for the spinoff, which comes after Harrington spoke out about the spinoff and cancellation of the original series. Initially, I held onto hope that the long-running CBS show might have a chance given the many cancellations we’ve seen. However, when news about Exiles broke, it was Moore who reached out to us all the day prior. Though I understand that’s just how the business works, I must admit there were no hard feelings towards the show and I wholeheartedly wish it success.
As for what viewers can expect from Exiles, there is an official synopsis. Check it out:
In a turn of events, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson (played by Moore) is summoned from his enforced retirement to head an experimental SWAT unit, composed of raw and unpredictable new recruits due to a high-profile mission going awry. Hondo finds himself in a challenging situation as he bridges the gap between generations, manages diverse personalities, and molds this motley crew into a cohesive team capable of safeguarding the city and preserving the program that shaped his identity.
At present, there’s no confirmed release date for the TV series S.W.A.T.: Exiles. It’s still uncertain which channel will broadcast it. The series is gaining traction, so we might soon hear more news about its premiere and potentially even new cast members joining in.
As you eagerly anticipate the release of “Exiles”, don’t forget to keep yourself entertained by streaming the initial seven seasons of “S.W.A.T.” on Netflix. And mark your calendars for September 15, as Season 8 will be available then!
