Shelley Duvall’s longtime partner Dan Gilroy says they ‘found moments of joy’ in days before her death at age 75
As an ardent fan who has followed the enchanting journey of Shelley Duvall throughout her illustrious career, I am deeply moved by Dan Gilroy’s heartfelt reminiscences of their extraordinary bond. Their tale is as captivating as any Hollywood blockbuster, filled with love, adventure, and the unyielding spirit that only true artists possess.
Dan Gilroy, Shelley Duvall’s partner of 34 years, has opened up about the final days of her life.
On July 11, the actress passed away at the age of 75 after experiencing difficulties related to diabetes. Now, Gilroy, who is 77, has spoken to People about the conclusion of this struggle, expressing that they managed to find instances of happiness along the way.
He recounted, ‘I’d bring my computer in, we’d watch some shows… Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme and things she had produced over the years and those gave some comfort.’
In 1990, the couple first crossed paths on the television musical “Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme,” produced by Disney. From that moment on, they became nearly inseparable.
‘We fell in love on the set,’ Dan said about the start of their decade-spanning relationship.
In 1996, the couple departed from Hollywood and settled in Texas. Here, they took care of a variety of animals, such as small birds like finches and parrots, along with dogs, cats, and even reptiles like lizards.
‘It was like a traveling menagerie,’ Dan remembered.
He didn’t grow up with a dog, but after meeting Shelley and falling for her, it turned out that she owned around seven dogs, as he revealed.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can’t help but share an intimate moment from my personal life – my beloved parrots, Austin, Birdie, and Taxi, are a constant source of joy and melancholy for me. Their melodious whistling is music to my ears, yet at times, their mimicking of my voice stirs feelings that are bittersweet.
He went on to say about the later years of Shelley’s life: ‘One month everything got really weird and paranoid, she felt under attack and asked the neighbors to come over and bring weapons to protect us.
From that point forward, she often sensed a continuous feeling of being under threat because her stepfather had been a retired FBI agent.
Five years ago, her brother and deceased mother extended an invitation to her for a dinner in Houston, a journey of approximately four hours by car. Upon our arrival, two individuals physically escorted her to Houston Methodist Hospital for roughly a week to ten days, as she recounted to the publication.
After causing quite an uproar, she was released from the hospital with diagnoses of both diabetes and dementia. This event caused a division within the family, and trust began to dwindle. It left her utterly terrified,” he stated.
Ever since the medical revelations, I, her devoted admirer, have found myself in a state of unwavering devotion. You see, despite being confined to her bed for an extended period, my beloved one never lost her zest for life. Remarkably, even when we could no longer walk together, our shared passion for the road remained undiminished. She loved driving more than anything, and that passion never waned, even in the face of adversity.
He mused that she had never contemplated her absence or the impending close, but eventually, it became an insurmountable distance. The psychological struggles seemed to have blinded her to the approaching eventuality, perhaps fortunately so.
Recalling Duvall’s last night, Gilroy expressed feeling a deep sense of regret.
In her last few months, she frequently called me multiple times each night due to needing to adjust position, being attended to, or requesting a drink, as I shared an adjacent room with her.
‘The night before she died, I told her, “Shelley, I have an interview tomorrow. I can’t keep waking up like this.” I found her the next morning and I couldn’t stop holding her and kissing her even though she wasn’t there anymore.’
Duvall’s swan song, “The Forest Hills”, is set for release on October 4th. According to Gilroy, she always considered herself a performer in her final role.
He remarked that it boosted her morale and brought home the realization, “This is my newest endeavor.” She had starred in numerous films, and it seemed to tie together her entire career, which was nothing short of impressive, he added.
He will remember Shelley as someone who made life ‘an adventure.’
In a unique blend of intelligence and naivety, she stood out to me unlike anyone else. Every day with her was filled with enthusiasm and joy, making life an exciting journey. That was Shelley, indeed. He reminisced affectionately.
