Shelley Duvall's longtime partner Dan Gilroy reacts to 2024 Emmy Awards' In Memoriam segment snub... after fans were outraged

As a longtime admirer and follower of Shelley Duvall’s illustrious career, I find myself deeply saddened by the oversight at this year’s Emmy In Memoriam segment. Despite Dan Gilroy’s graciousness about the snub, it is hard not to feel a pang of disappointment for such an iconic actress who left an indelible mark on both film and television.

Shelley Duvall’s longtime companion is handling with grace the omission from the In Memoriam segment during the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.

Dan Gilroy, long-time partner of the late Duvall, expressed to TMZ on Monday that he didn’t feel disheartened by the absence of a tribute for her at the event celebrating outstanding achievements in TV production.

On July 11, Duvall passed away at the age of 75, but unfortunately, she was not included in the In Memoriam segment during the award ceremony that focused on television. However, she wasn’t the only notable figure missing from the event. Director Eleanor Coppola, Chita Rivera, Johnny Wactor, political commentator Lou Dobbs, and General Hospital star Tyler Christopher were also not present.

Gilroy was particularly fair-minded and kind, considering the possibility that the omission of his long-term affection by the Emmy producers might have just been a mistake.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share an interesting behind-the-scenes fact: Production schedules for our beloved shows sometimes include segments about fallen stars, which are often planned months ahead. Regrettably, it isn’t unusual for stars who pass away closer to the show date to inadvertently be overlooked due to this advance planning process.

In a more serious tone, Gilroy pointed out that briefly disappearing from the screen was just a minor insult in light of the challenging physical and mental battles she’s faced over the past few years.

Specifically, Duvall was struggling with diabetes-related health issues that eventually took her life at the home she shared with Gilroy in Blanco, Texas, mere days following her 75th birthday.

Gilroy expressed gratitude for the fan support, yet at the same time, he advised them against spending unnecessary concern over his partner’s oversight in the Emmy awards.

Additionally, he mentioned that he had been inundated with numerous letters and messages from fans, expressing their well wishes following Duvall’s passing.

Despite building an impressive television career, especially towards its latter stages, she’s most famously recognized for her roles in some timeless – almost iconic – movies.

She’s most famously recognized for playing the troubled spouse of a writer-transformed-into-a-caretaker-at-a-hotel, who was gradually losing his sanity in Stanley Kubrick’s timeless adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, “The Shining” (1980), alongside Jack Nicholson.

During that period, Duvall’s dramatic portrayal was nominated for the Worst Actress category at the initial 1981 Razzies event – an award ceremony that later distanced itself from this recognition. However, modern evaluations of her performance have been significantly more positive, and the film is now often recognized as one of the best horror movies ever made.

Duvall frequently collaborated with director Robert Altman. She took on leading parts in his films “Thieves Like Us” from 1974 and “3 Women” from 1977, and also appeared in supporting roles in “Brewster McLoud” (1970), “McCabe & Mrs. Miller” (1971), “Nashville” (1975) and “Popeye” (1980). In the latter film, she shared the screen with Robin Williams.

Additionally, she played a well-received secondary role in Woody Allen’s Academy Award-winning film Annie Hall (1977). Subsequently, she was featured in Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits (1981) and Jane Campion’s adaptation of The Portrait Of A Lady (1996), as well as several other movies.

Duvall gained widespread recognition in television by developing and presenting the well-liked anthology show, Faerie Tale Theatre, between 1982 and 1987.

After that, she continued with several shorter-duration series such as Tall Tales & Legends (1985-1987), Nightmare Classics (1989) and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories (1992-93). Additionally, she made appearances in many other TV shows as a guest star.

Earlier reports indicated that Dan Gilroy, who survived her, petitioned the court handling her estate division to grant him most of her properties, despite the fact that they were not formally married.

He had asked the court to rule that they had been married under ‘common law,’ as they had been in a romantic partnership for more than three decades.
