Sheamus may never will the WWE Intercontinental Championship

In the January 25th episode of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, Sheamus took on Bron Breakker for the Intercontinental Championship. The match was action-packed and intense, as both wrestlers are known for their aggressive style. As predicted, Breakker emerged victorious, retaining the IC title. However, the question now is where does Sheamus go next, after another failed attempt to claim a WWE title that has so far eluded him?

Over the weekend’s game, I chanced upon an intriguing piece of data shared on Twitter. It turns out that throughout Sheamus’ WWE career, he has made ten attempts to claim the Intercontinental Championship, but alas, has yet to secure a victory. Interestingly, WWE seems to be spinning this into a sort of narrative, often emphasizing that holding this title is what keeps Sheamus from joining an elite circle of WWE performers.

The narrative surrounding Sheamus’ career is significant because it lends meaning to all his victories, setbacks, and rivalries. Each victory, defeat, or conflict either keeps him in contention for the title or eliminates him from it altogether. This storyline can be resumed at any point, swiftly reintroducing Sheamus when needed.

However, does this strategy apply to him given the current usage of the IC title? Previously, the Intercontinental Championship was often viewed as an insignificant belt with no real clout or prestige attached to it. The length and importance of title reigns made little difference, as the championship did not elevate any performers. But everything changed when GUNTHER claimed the Intercontinental Championship, kickstarting a 666-day reign that significantly revamped WWE’s midcard landscape. This extended run has left its mark on Breakker’s title tenure, positioning him as a promising young talent in line for a major push within WWE. Although Breakker is currently a two-time champion and may not be expected to maintain a multi-year reign, WWE intends to use this championship to present Breakker as formidable a threat as possible.

The predicament for Sheamus arises here: Will he be the seasoned wrestler who ultimately manages to snatch the title from the rising stars within the WWE roster? Or is he simply being utilized to elevate newer talents as he has done consistently throughout his career? This conundrum leaves his fans in a tense state, eagerly anticipating his long-awaited career breakthrough. With 22 years of experience and joining the WWE in 2009, Sheamus is one of those veterans who arguably deserves the biggest moments he can realistically attain before his time comes to an end. However, it becomes increasingly challenging to envision him capturing the Intercontinental Championship, particularly after suffering another decisive defeat.

In the world of professional wrestling, Sheamus has gained immense popularity among fans. They eagerly anticipate his performances, which are often described as “one hit after another.” However, it appears increasingly unlikely that he’ll secure the WWE Intercontinental Championship, given the progression of time.
