Zahra Ahmadi, who plays Esther in Beyond Paradise, believes her character needs to become more open. In an interview with Digital Spy, Ahmadi explained that Esther’s constant need to appear strong and avoid vulnerability is now “unhealthy” and “not doing her any good.” She described it as a tiresome habit that Esther needs to break.
Ahmadi shared a preview of what’s coming up for DS Williams in the next season of Beyond Paradise. She explained that Williams is starting to embrace vulnerability, which is exactly what she needs. Ahmadi believes this is making Williams stronger, and viewers will see her character grow and flourish towards the end of the series.

Ahmadi spoke about Esther, expressing empathy and pointing out that she became a mother very young, and may not have fully developed emotionally at the time.
Becoming a mother young definitely helps you grow emotionally, but it can also feel like your own personal development is put on hold. You’re stepping into a role where you’re guiding someone else before you’ve fully experienced adulthood yourself.
She explained that she believed the character sacrificed her own growth to give Zoe (Melina Sinadinou) everything she needed, and that might be why she sometimes struggles with emotions.
Ahmadi hinted at a change in the relationship between Esther and Humphrey (played by Kris Marshall) in the fourth season, suggesting their roles might be flipped.
What to Read Next
This series has some genuinely sweet moments between Humphrey and Esther. Usually, Esther is the one helping Humphrey with his personal issues, but this time it’s the opposite. Humphrey really takes the lead in guiding Esther, and surprisingly, she lets him – something she rarely allows anyone to do.
There are also some heartwarming scenes with Martha, played by Sally Bretton. Her friendship with the other characters develops beautifully throughout the story.
Esther is caught in a complicated, on-again, off-again relationship with Archie, but the actor playing her, Ahmadi, hopes her character will ultimately find deeper satisfaction in life.

I truly hope Esther finds deep and fulfilling love, and that doesn’t just mean a romantic relationship. She tends to be very guarded in her daily life, which I understand given her profession, but it also stems from the pain of losing Zoe’s father.
I hope Esther can allow herself to be vulnerable, to feel pain without shielding herself, and understand that even difficult emotions can come from deep love and strong feelings. That’s my wish for her.
The fourth season of Beyond Paradise will premiere on BBC One at 8pm on Friday, March 27th, immediately after the season finale of Death in Paradise. All three shows – Beyond Paradise, Death in Paradise, and Return to Paradise – are available to watch on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
