Gaga altered her vocal style during the “Folie A Deux” collaboration with Joker, aiming to make her portrayal unique compared to her usual albums and live performances.
In the DC Comics film, the multi-talented performer plays a character modeled on Harley Quinn named Lee, sharing the screen with Joaquin Phoenix, who reappears in the role of the psychologically troubled Arthur Fleck, better known as The Joker.
In Arkham Asylum, Gaga’s character works as a music therapist. She encounters Arthur and develops a keen interest in him that eventually escalates into an all-consuming obsession towards the imprisoned felon.
The renowned singer deliberately modified her on-screen portrayal to make it crystal clear to viewers that she was merely acting.
As the passionate admirer that I am, let me clarify something about Lady Gaga in her latest film role: Although she’s renowned by her stage name, you should know that in this movie, it’s not just Lady Gaga on screen. Instead, I, the actress, have meticulously crafted my singing style to embody Lee, ensuring that every note comes from her essence and not from me as a performer.
In an interesting twist, the artist famous for “Poker Face” mentioned that she intentionally incorporated several off-key moments to ensure viewers would perceive more than just Lady Gaga when watching Lee in the film.
She clarified: ‘In truth, there were quite a few missed notes, particularly from Lee. As a professionally-trained vocalist, my breathing pattern changed when I sung like Lee.’
When performing on stage, I utilize a specific, controlled method for singing, ensuring pitch accuracy, proper rhythm, and the correct duration of notes. However, Lee is unaware of how to execute such techniques.
In simpler terms, this means stripping away the technical aspects, discarding any preconceived notions about it being an art form, and fully immersing in her true self.
Instead of merely changing her singing style, as director Todd Phillips explained, Lady Gaga significantly personalized the role by modifying certain characteristics of Harley Quinn from her comic book depictions. He likened her portrayal of Harley Quinn to that of a follower in the Manson Family.
Charles Manson, who passed away in November 2017 at the age of 83, transformed his followers known as the Manson Family, many of whom were middle-class American girls connected to the hippie culture, into perpetrators of a string of crimes and murders during the late ’60s and early ’70s. Among these acts was the tragic taking of actress Sharon Tate’s life.
Phillips, 53, stated: “There are certain elements that might seem reminiscent to some, but it’s essentially Lady Gaga’s unique portrayal, along with Scott [Silver, co-writer] and my understanding of the character.”
She took on a similar dynamic as Charles Manson, garnering adoration from some individuals. This is reminiscent of certain imprisoned murderers who still command respect or admiration from others.
In the film, certain aspects of Harley’s character were inspired by the comics, yet we adapted and shaped those elements according to our creative vision.
