Shayna Jack’s Tearful Honor: From Scandal to Triumph on I’m A Celebrity!

On “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” last Sunday, Shayna Jack couldn’t hold back her feelings upon discovering that she had received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

During an emotional segment on the program, fellow star camper Nicky Buckley announced unexpected news as she read a tender letter sent from home with great emotion.

The letter revealed that the 26-year-old Queensland athlete was among this year’s recipients.

With a glimmer of moisture in her eyes, Shayna conveyed her heartfelt appreciation during a private chat, stating, “These are indeed tears of joy.

Later on, she was spotted being hugged by her camp mates, who celebrated her remarkable accomplishment with their warm congratulations.

‘I never thought I would get to a point where I’d receive such an honourable award,’ Jack shared.

In numerous instances throughout my life, one learns to swiftly advance – be it victories, races, or contests – without taking a moment to revel in the success. However, this might be the first occasion when I received something and instantaneously felt overwhelming happiness and jubilation.

Achieving this recognition was a major achievement in Jack’s challenging path, where they overcame a doping incident in 2019 that nearly terminated their swimming career.

At the tender age of 20, Jack was given a two-year suspension due to testing positive for the anabolic substance Ligandrol, a claim he’s consistently asserted was ingested unknowingly.

After the court dispute that ensued, Jack paid a substantial cost – both emotionally and financially – totaling $180,000 to restore his reputation.

At the performance, she shared details of how deeply the experience affected both her and her partner, hockey player Joel Rintala from the Kookaburras team.

In a straightforward conversation with the other camp members, Jack disclosed that Rintala felt concern for her own safety during her toughest times.

‘Some nights I was in a bad place,’ she admitted.

He described those evenings as incredibly terrifying. He’d rush home, unsure of what awaited him – whether he’d discover an action he could never live with, a regret that would be eternal.

In addition, during a private reflection on the program, Jack similarly became emotional, elaborating on the significance of sharing his battles with hardships.

She mentioned that she prefers discussing the issue with those nearby, using their company as a means to tackle its challenges, rather than allowing it to dominate her life so strongly.

As I unburden myself, piece by precious piece, I find the freedom to step ahead in life, leaving behind the heavy weight that once seemed an integral part of who I am.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics held in August, Shayna experienced a heart-wrenching setback when she placed last in the 50m freestyle final that took place in France.

Meg Harrison managed to defeat her teammate, earning the silver medal, while Sarah Sjostrom dominated and claimed the top spot in the competition.

Shayna struggled to recover following a positive test result for Ligandrol, an illegal muscle-enhancing agent. She needed to battle her way back from a difficult situation.

Her ban, which lasted for four years, was eventually lifted because it was determined that her positive test was due to contamination, not intentional doping.

For a while now, Jack has consistently asserted their innocence and fought against inner struggles in order to regain the peak of their athletic career.

Despite facing a setback in Paris, Shayna made it clear that her desire to compete for Australia at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles remains undiminished.

‘I definitely have that motivation to come back in four years’ time,’ she said.

As I embark on this new journey, I see it as the dawning of a fresh chapter in my life. This is my moment of redemption, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead and the tales yet to be told.

I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! continues Monday – Thursday at 7.30pm on 10 and 10 Play.
