Shaun Ryder admits he has no intention of coming off weight-loss jab Ozempic after shedding two stone

Shaun Ryder says he plans to continue using the weight-loss drug Ozempic, having already lost over two stone.

Shaun Ryder, 63, of the Happy Mondays has lost weight after starting a medication in May 2023.

The singer recently stated he’ll only stop getting vaccinated if he starts to look like a ‘screaming skull.’

Shaun explained to The Sun that he still needs to manage his weight. He said that even with a healthy diet of just lettuce and strawberries, his underactive thyroid would still cause him to weigh over 26 stone.

He continued: ‘I’m on more drugs now than I ever was.

‘But they’re all legal and very healthy.’

Shaun shared that he likely would have lost custody of his children years ago if not for his wife’s support.

The actor has two children, Pearl and Lulu, with his wife Joanne, and four more children from previous relationships.

In a recent interview with Loaded Revival, the online version of the well-known men’s magazine, the musician discussed being a father and revealed that his children have struggled with ADHD.

The actor is very proud of his family, but he readily acknowledges that his wife, Joanna, who he married in 2010, deserves the real credit for raising their children. When asked for parenting advice, he humbly downplayed his own skills.

He exclaimed, clearly frustrated, questioning why people didn’t come to him for advice, considering his own shortcomings as a parent. He admitted his wife handles all the childcare, and jokingly suggested that if he were in charge, social services would have intervened years ago due to his inability to care for them properly.

Shaun was diagnosed with ADHD in his late 50s. He realized this explained many of his younger, more impulsive behaviors, even contributing to past struggles with drug use, which he has openly discussed. He jokingly referred to it as the reason for all his ‘madness’ back then, recognizing that ADHD can significantly affect behavior and lead to impulsive decisions.

The actor recently revealed he continues to work and earn money, even now, to pay for his children’s therapy as they manage their ADHD.

Shaun, known for appearing on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! South Africa last year, recently revealed that six of his children – Jael, Coco, Pearl, Lulu, Joseph, and Oliver – have the same medical condition as his two daughters. He had previously only mentioned his daughters being affected.

In a 2023 interview with The Sun, the lead singer of Black Grape – who received a diagnosis of the condition in his fifties – revealed that it has unexpectedly led to one of his daughters excelling in mathematics, becoming a ‘genius’ at the subject.

Shaun openly discussed the financial difficulties he’s facing, explaining that five of his six children require therapy. He stated he works constantly to cover the costs, using strong language to express the burden.

He went on to stress the uniqueness of each ADHD case, stating that each one is different.

Shaun realized that even when he was in school, he’d frequently leave a classroom without remembering what he’d just learned. He also thought about how his condition contributed to his struggles with addiction.

He explained that even though he wasn’t diagnosed until he was around 50, he always had trouble remembering things he learned in school. He could understand lessons while he was in class, but would quickly forget everything as soon as it ended – he just couldn’t retain the information.

‘And also the ADHD, with me, led to promiscuous behaviour, drugs, trouble.’

Shaun became well-known in the 1980s as a member of the band Happy Mondays. He played alongside his brother Paul, and friends Mark Day, Paul Davis, and Gary Whelan. Their friend Bez later joined the group, playing percussion.

In the 90s he was also the lead singer of another band, Black Grape.

As well as his singing career, Shaun has also enjoyed successful stints on reality television.
