Some Walt Disney Company shareholders are asking for details about why Jimmy Kimmel was temporarily taken off the air, as stated in a letter they recently sent to the company.
As a big fan of late-night talk shows, I was pretty surprised to hear about the situation with Jimmy Kimmel. Apparently, the American Federation of Teachers and Reporters Without Borders sent a letter this Wednesday expressing concern about Disney’s decision to put “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on indefinite suspension. It all stemmed from comments Kimmel made during his monologue about the person who attacked conservative activist Charlie Kirk, and these groups are pushing for Disney to be more open about *why* they took that action. They really want to know what led to the suspension, and it’s a bit worrying when we see potential censorship impacting something like a late-night show.

As a huge fan of late-night comedy, I was surprised to hear that Nexstar Broadcasting won’t be airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” when it returns tonight. Apparently, Disney – Kimmel’s network, ABC – is bringing him back, but Nexstar has decided not to carry the show. It’s a bit disappointing, honestly, as I was looking forward to watching it!
Disney brought back Jimmy Kimmel’s show on Tuesday, explaining that they originally paused it to prevent making a sensitive situation even worse for the country. They also described some of his earlier remarks as poorly timed and insensitive.
The suspension of the late-night host quickly sparked a major political controversy and a national discussion about freedom of speech. People protested outside both the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood and Disney’s offices in Burbank. Over 400 celebrities also signed a letter criticizing what they saw as government censorship, and some urged viewers to cancel their Disney+ subscriptions.
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, stated that Disney shareholders deserve to know what happened after a threat was made by Brendan Carr to take action against ABC if they didn’t address Jimmy Kimmel’s commentary. She argues that Disney’s board has a legal duty to prioritize shareholders’ interests and is seeking clarification on whether the board compromised those interests to appease the Trump administration.
Before Disney suspended Jimmy Kimmel, the head of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, publicly asked Disney to address his behavior during a recent podcast. Carr also warned that TV stations broadcasting the show could face repercussions. Just before Disney’s announcement, two major station groups, Nexstar and Sinclair, stated they would cancel the show and wouldn’t air it again.
The letter asks Disney to share all records about the decision to suspend or bring back Kimmel’s show, such as meeting notes or any written documents related to it.
The letter alleges that the Board and executives likely violated their legal obligations to act in the best interests of the company and its shareholders by prioritizing political connections or personal relationships over what was best for the business.
Disney did not respond to a request for comment.
