Shanghai Major Grand Finals Viewership: 1.3 million tune in to the Grand Finals

Shanghai Major Grand Finals Viewership: 1.3 million tune in to the Grand Finals

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the Shanghai Major has been a game-changer for Counter-Strike 2! The rise of Donk as the youngest MVP superstar and Team Spirit’s triumph over FaZe Clan was nothing short of electrifying.

The viewership saw a surge despite a dip in English-speaking audience at the Shanghai Major.

At the Shanghai Major tournament, Donk was crowned the game’s youngest MVP sensation. Team Spirit triumphed over FaZe Clan in the championship match to claim victory in China and establish themselves as the top Counter-Strike team as we approach the end of 2024. As the first Major for Counter-Strike 2 held in Asia, the global spotlight was focused on the viewership numbers for this event.

Shanghai Major Grand Finals Viewership: 1.3 million tune in to the Grand Finals

At an inconvenient timezone for most Counter-Strike enthusiasts, the Shanghai Major took place, yet it managed to draw over a million viewers simultaneously – a significant increase. Interestingly, while English and other language viewership dropped, Russian viewership skyrocketed, compensating for any decrease in other languages’ watchers.

The Russian-speaking fanbase of Counter-Strike is quite dedicated and tends to back Team NAVI. However, during the Shanghai Major Finals, NAVI was not participating. Instead, Team Spirit faced off against FaZe Clan, providing a new team for the audience to support.

As a gamer, I noticed a significant surge – about 50% – in Russian-speaking viewers during the Shanghai Major finals. To be specific, there were close to half a million people tuning in, which is nearly 100,000 more than the Copenhagen Major 2024 had. This data comes from esportscharts.com.

The finals were filled with tangible enthusiasm due to the nail-biting circumstances of the Grand Finals. When Team Spirit seemed almost victorious at 12-5, FaZe Clan staged a thrilling comeback, tying the score at 12-11. Nevertheless, Team Spirit secured the victory in the following round, clinching the Major. If FaZe Clan had won the subsequent round, initiating Overtime, the viewership would likely have spiked as more and more spectators were eagerly tuning in.

Donk was the superstar of the finals, racking up four aces during the Grand Finals against FaZe Clan. This number surpasses that of Flamie set during IEMf Katowice 2019 when he was on NAVI. With a 1.49 rating, Donk’s performance was far ahead of his peers with Zywoo coming in next at 1.37.

Here are the top matches by viewership during the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024:

  • FaZe Clan vs Team Spirit: 1,330,040
  • G2 esports vs FaZe Clan: 951,409
  • MOUZ vs Team Spirit: 650,375
  • G2 vs HEROIC: 642,423
  • FaZe Clan vs Vitality: 641,879
