Even though some people are trying to get someone else to perform with Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl halftime show, Shakira is fully supportive of him remaining the performer.
Shakira recently told Variety she’s excited for Bad Bunny’s concert at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on February 8th.
“It’s about time!” she said.
During the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show, Bad Bunny performed alongside Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, making it the first time the show featured an all-Latine lineup. J Balvin also made an appearance.
Shakira recalled a time when including even a portion of a performance in Spanish felt daring. She noted how far Spanish-language music has come in terms of mainstream acceptance since she began her career. She was reflecting on the anniversaries of her successful Spanish album, “Pies Descalzos” (1995), and “Oral Fixation (Volumes 1 & 2)” (2005) during the interview.
Shakira believes that the initial confusion or disapproval her music faced in English-speaking countries ultimately paved the way for her current success. She feels that overcoming those challenges was an important part of her journey.
Some conservative voices, including former President Trump, have criticized the choice of Bad Bunny to headline the major American sporting event. Trump recently called the decision “crazy” and “absolutely ridiculous” in an interview with Newsmax.
A Change.org petition with over 54,000 signatures asked for Bad Bunny to be removed from a performance and replaced with Texas singer George Strait, arguing it would be a better way to celebrate American culture.
Turning Point USA, founded by the late Charlie Kirk, is planning its own halftime show called “The All American Halftime Show.” They haven’t revealed who will be performing yet.
It’s inaccurate to say Bad Bunny isn’t an American artist. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, which means people born there are American citizens. Plus, the Super Bowl halftime show has featured performers from outside the U.S. before – artists like the Rolling Stones, U2, Rihanna, Shania Twain, and Coldplay have all performed at past shows.
Despite the anti-Bad Bunny buzz, Shakira doubled down on her support of the singer.
She expressed her excitement that Bad Bunny, a symbol of Latin culture and the growing worldwide popularity of Spanish-language music, will be performing on the world’s biggest stage.
“It’s the perfect moment for a performance like this. I can’t wait to watch it.”
