Shakira gets candid about ‘constant fear’ of living in the US amid Trump immigration raids and protest riots

Shakira shared her experiences as an immigrant in the U.S., stating that it often feels like living with persistent anxiety or apprehension.

The Colombian-born musician, who relocated to Miami, Florida during her teenage years in pursuit of her musical aspirations, vocalized her opinions on the immigration policies under the Trump administration.

This occurs during continuous demonstrations against ICE, as raids and disturbances persist in cities such as Los Angeles. Meanwhile, notable figures like Kendall Jenner have voiced their own politically charged opinions in response to the uproar and tumult.

She shared with BBC News that at the age of 19, much like numerous Colombian immigrants seeking a brighter tomorrow, I relocated to the United States.

Shakira, currently at the age of 48, revealed that she mastered the English language by delving into poems crafted by Walt Whitman and lyrics composed by Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Her intention was to grasp the inner workings of the English language within the context of songwriting.

She spoke about the ongoing immigration enforcement focused on reported infractions, and stated that current immigrants in the U.S. are living with fear, finding it heartbreaking to observe this situation.

Her recent public statements follow close on the heels of her cancellation of three consecutive concerts, a move made following the success of her record-setting tour.

She motivated her Latin American fans, using some Spanish words, to keep their strength.

‘Now, more than ever, we have to remain united,’ she said.

In these times, it’s crucial that we speak up loudly and unequivocally, emphasizing that while a nation may alter its immigration policies, the way we treat every individual should always reflect humanity.

Earlier this year, Shakira won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album for Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.

In the course of her address, she honored the award by acknowledging all her fellow immigrants living here.

She added: ‘You are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you.’

Yesterday, Kendall Jenner too posted a strong political commentary, reflecting the ongoing protests in Los Angeles regarding the ICE raids instigated by President Donald Trump.

Disturbances arose following Trump’s decision to execute ICE raids locally, which included mobilizing approximately 2,000 National Guard soldiers. This move was made despite the opposition expressed by Governor Gavin Newsom of California.

In response, several celebrities in addition to Shakira and Jenner also made a statement.

Additionally, there are Eva Longoria and Chrissy Teigen, both of whom ignited passionate posts on Instagram to mobilize their supporters.

Yesterday, Jenner shared a message on her Instagram Stories, emphasizing ‘Los Angeles Immigrant Community Resources.’ She urged her followers to join in and help raise awareness about this cause.

The organization’s social media post contains a link and the message “Let’s rally LA!” This means it’s time to unite everyone in our community. Your actions truly matter, so join us in making a positive difference. Let’s take care of each other!

Let’s all stand together. Spread these resources for the immigrant community far and wide. Re-share, boost, and organize. The Spanish version will be available shortly.
