Shah Rukh Khan’s Wild Plan to Leave a Lasting Mark on Hollywood
Shah Rukh Khan‘s captivating influence, perhaps more like a whirlwind, refuses to be confined by geographical boundaries or the passage of time. His smoldering eyes, signature hair toss, and mesmerizing dance moves have enchanted viewers for over three decades, starting with romantic comedies such as “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” which became iconic in the 1990s Bollywood era and catapulted him to international fame, to the high-grossing action thrillers of today that have shattered box office records.
In the ’90s, Khan’s popularity soared, particularly among Indians and other South Asians residing abroad seeking opportunities. This global audience developed an emotional connection with him that persists till today. He recognizes that the feelings his characters provoke extend beyond the screen, as evidenced by a German fan who watched his movies and expressed, “You serve as a trigger for emotions.
Khan tells TIME that he’s more than just casual enjoyment. He explains, ‘I’m a piece of home, even if I’m not a memory.’ The diaspora played a significant role in making me the successful actor I am today.”
“Khan says to TIME that he is not simply entertainment; rather, he is a memento from home, though not a memory. ‘The diaspora has shaped me into the star I am,’ he adds.
At this year’s Met Gala in 2025, Khan made a significant stride on the international scene, marking himself as the first Indian male actor to attend the event. Sporting a black silk sherwani-style jacket over trousers, adorned with necklaces accentuating his chest and featuring a large diamond letter K – symbolizing King Khan – he was styled by renowned Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Notably, Mukherjee also designed the stunning couture sari Alia Bhatt wore to last year’s Met Gala. Among the other luminaries gracing the event were Bad Bunny, Priyanka Chopra, Lisa from BLACKPINK, and stars from ‘The White Lotus’. Amidst a political backdrop, this year’s gala carries an empowering charge: As the Trump Administration persists in its efforts to limit diversity and equity initiatives across industries, imposing a 100% tariff on foreign films on Sunday, global celebrities are showcasing their admiration for Black male style and its profound impact on fashion by flaunting their ensembles on the red (or rather, blue) carpet.
As a proud representative of my nation, I feel it’s crucial to showcase our culture and spirit on the global stage. This year, India is making its mark in numerous arenas, and I believe it’s essential for us to make our presence known.
In line with this, I was particularly drawn to this year’s Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”. I appreciated the message it conveyed – revolution and resolution, not through conflict or confrontation, but through exuberance and artistry. Dressing up in a way that made a powerful statement is a powerful form of expression.
As I stand on the brink of my sixth decade in a relentlessly evolving world of cinema, my upcoming steps are deeply intertwined with the legacy of my generation. In the near future, I will share the silver screen with my daughter Suhana Khan in the film titled “King,” while my son, Aryan Khan, is readying a series slated for Netflix release this year, under our production house, Red Chillies Entertainment.
Remembering my early days as an aspiring actor in bustling Mumbai, fresh from New Delhi, I was audacious and brimming with unfounded self-confidence. “I merely acted,” I would say, “and had little to lose.”
Contrastingly, the terrain my children tread is markedly different, carpeted with privilege that brings its own set of challenges and expectations. Recognizing the impact of my presence, I share: “The privilege they possess should serve as a humbling reminder. They walk in the shadows cast by their background.”
Yet, I remind them that this arduous path is fraught with its own shadows. The legacy that precedes them should not be a factor in determining whether they are liked or disliked. Instead, it should serve as a testament to their individual talents and merits.
Following years of influencing Indian cinema, Khan is focusing on the future of filmmaking that transcends the era of “King” and his personal impact on the art form. He champions the application of cutting-edge technology to create a cinematic reality, aiming for grand storytelling utilizing existing tools. As he puts it, “Everything now is more polished, louder, superior. The lighting is improved. The accessories are sleeker. Shouldn’t films also grow in size? They need to be bigger.” He adds, “Stories must remain truthful but the way they’re presented will have to become more captivating. I mostly watch content on my phone these days. Why should I go to the cinema? It needs to offer an experience, like Disney World.
No one understands better than Khan how to embody both the richness and contrast of a star’s journey, be it on screen in an epic movie, walking the red carpet at a worldwide fashion event, or performing in a global music tour. His inspiration stems from the same drive that led him to Mumbai many years ago. He expressed, “I want to feel as I did when I was 26 and act as if I’m 60.”
