Shaboozey breaks silence after his viral reaction to Megan Moroney’s claim about who ‘invented’ country music

After the awkward encounter with Megan Moroney during the American Music Awards on Monday, Shaboozey finally spoke up about it.

The atmosphere grew awkward on stage during the performance when Megan, aged 27, who is fondly known as the country sweetheart, delivered a joke that appeared to miss its mark with Shaboozey, who is 30 years old.

In a turn of events, the two were on stage to bestow the honor for the Favorite Country Duo or Group, but Megan declared that the Carter Family, an early American folk band who won the award first back in 1974, essentially pioneered the genre we now call country music.

Shaboozey looked utterly displeased and seemed to give her a sidelong glance, which soon became widely popular online.

On Tuesday, the artist took to social media multiple times to comment on a specific moment. In one post on platform X, they wrote: “Discovering the real history of country music reveals such a potent narrative that it remains indelible…

Afterward, he posted another tweet, saying, “Country music’s authentic tale revolves around unity in diversity, appreciating and cherishing what binds us.

Shaboozey left a comment on Megan’s latest Instagram post about the event, stating that his response was unrelated to her specifically.

He wanted to make it clear that his behavior during the AMAs wasn’t connected to Megan Moroney in any way. He thinks highly of her as a gifted, dedicated artist making significant strides in country music. In fact, he holds her in high regard.

Today, I’ve come across some disheartening remarks aimed at her, which doesn’t align with the spirit of the occasion. Instead, let’s keep our focus on the positive – she is truly remarkable and a shining example of the values embodied by our rural communities!

In response to the comment, it seemed as though Megan, currently entangled in a complicated and highly-publicized love situation, remained unfazed.

Many other comments underneath her latest post offered strong opinions on what she said.

‘Girl get your facts straight!!’ one person wrote.

‘Girl how you a country musician but don’t know the origin of country music,’ another questioned.

‘Don’t erase the real history of country music,’ another added.

It appears that the singer seemed unfazed by the chaos, posting a picture on Instagram Stories of her meal – a hot dog with fries – accompanied by the caption, “Girl’s Lunch.

At the AMAs, the tense situation unfolded prior to Megan learning the results, as she contemplated the Carter Family instead.

‘The first award went to the Carter Family, who basically invented country music,’ she said.

However, just moments after she spoke, the atmosphere grew tense as Shaboozey, known for his popular track ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ and his appearance on Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ album, seemed to shoot her a disapproving glance.

For a few moments, the two stars remained quiet, with him gazing at her, then, following a significant gap in conversation, he let out a laugh and declared the victor.

Viewers immediately took to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss the painful moment.

‘User humorously commented that Megan Moroney claimed the Carter Family originated country music, to which Shaboozy responded with a disapproving look. Exactly the sort of interaction I was hoping to witness.’

A different person wrote, ‘Goodbye Shaboozey, giving Megan Moroneyside-eye. It’s awkward when a white person claims credit for inventing country music in the presence of a black country musician, Megan, really? No way, Megan!’

‘This situation feels really uncomfortable,’ a fourth post stated.

‘The Carter family significantly influenced country music, but to claim they invented it is rather far-fetched.’

Others, however, defended Megan.

It was noted that Megan Moroney didn’t actually compose the script, she was merely reading from a prompt.

A different user found it frustrating that people were criticizing Megan Moroney’s words as if they were scripted, saying, “That really irritates me!

Apart from her latest contentious incident, Megan isn’t just known for that single event; she’s also found herself in a complicated love situation resembling a love triangle.

The gossip revolves around hit-maker Riley Green, aged 36, who has teamed up with fellow Alabaman artist Ella Langley, 26, as well as Megan, fueling speculation about potential romantic involvements with both women.

Last year, Langley and Green garnered attention when they released their popular love song “You Look Like You Love Me” and the duet “Don’t Mind If I Do”. Their chemistry during live performances sparked intrigue among fans, leading many to speculate about their relationship.

Fans of country music picked up on the fact that Langley stopped following Moroney, who identifies herself as the ’emo cowgirl’, on Instagram, following whispers about her connection with Green. This observation became more significant when photos emerged of them enjoying a getaway in Saint Barthelemy (St Barts).

At the 2025 ACM Awards, all three stars were visible as the group’s dynamics became particularly noticeable. During their acceptance speech, Moroney subtly expressed disapproval by casting sidelong glances towards Green and Langley.

None of the three stars have publicly commented on the situation as of yet.
