Sexyy Red Faces Backlash from MLK’s Daughter Over Controversial AI Image
On the occasion of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Sexy Red faced criticism from Reverend Bernice King, his daughter, due to an argumentative AI image that she shared.
Bernice, aged 61, requested the 26-year-old rapper, known as Janae Nierah Wherry, to remove an image showing Sexyy Red holding hands with the renowned American activist, who was tragically killed on April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.
In a tweet, Bernice expressed that the content was deliberately offensive, dishonoring, regrettable, and disrespectful towards her family, particularly her late father who fought for civil and human rights and peace, but unfortunately, he was murdered before he could respond. She kindly requested Sexyy Red to remove the post, which she complied with.
Later on, Bernice shared with her audience that she had no issues with the TikTok celebrity personally, however, she found the portrayal of her father distasteful.
Bernice made it clear, “Don’t attribute your opinions to me. I strongly disagree with labeling Sexyy Red as ‘degraded’, ‘ghetto’, or ‘waste’. These terms are not appropriate or fair.
I’ve previously expressed disapproval when others have insulted people by likening them to either of my parents.
Bernice expressed confusion about the manner in which her father’s image was being used, as it doesn’t accurately reflect his military service and selflessness. This is especially troubling on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of all days.
Bernice remarked, ‘Regardless of whether you oppose him, dislike his methods, or have heard negative things from those who despised him, why act in such a way?’
Though she removed the original post, Sexyy Red kept a fake image online that combined an image of Martin Luther King Jr., during his historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in Washington D.C., on August 28, 1963, with other elements.
In the reworked photograph, labeled ‘Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!’, Sexxy Red is depicted next to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (the man who delivered his influential “I Have a Dream” speech on that particular day), holding a pile of money.
Additionally, the image contained rapper Chief Keef and a banner stating “G.B.E. [Glory Boyz Entertainment] Dislikes Trump.
People had mixed responses to the event, with several agreeing with Bernice’s opinion. Meanwhile, some social media users on X/Twitter criticized the musical artist (known for songs like Pound Town, Get It Sexyy, and Whatchu Kno About Me) due to the AI image involving King.
One user expressed that it’s unfortunate when individuals fail to appreciate the significance of history and the reverence it deserves.
Another said they had ‘respect for Bernice King speaking out,’ as ‘that image crossed a line.’
One user pointed out that it’s crucial to treat historical figures with the appropriate level of respect, taking into account the significant contributions they made towards advancing civil rights.
Some individuals expressed their belief that Sexyy Red might encounter career consequences due to the social media controversy, with one person even reaching out to Bruno Mars, asking him to reconsider or cancel their planned collaboration.
A different individual remarked, ‘Just as abruptly, that captivating crimson profession has ended. There are boundaries you should never overstep.’
Another added, ‘I stopped playing her music and unfollowed her on Spotify because of this!’
As a die-hard admirer, I couldn’t help but notice another user’s remark about our beloved Sexyy Red. They mentioned that the recent exchange was just her typical brand of drama, always finding herself entangled in some sort of mischief.
One user spoke up for Sexyy Red, explaining that the image with the deceased icon wasn’t created by the rapper. Instead, it had circulated across social media platforms, and overall, it was considered quite harmless.
As a devoted admirer, let me share my thoughts: “That picture of the girl has gone viral, but it wasn’t her creation. She’s just posing, nothing malicious or harmful is depicted as compared to certain other images I’ve seen floating around.
On Monday, Bernice took charge at a service commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.’s day in Atlanta, held at the Ebenezer Baptist Church where the revered leader once served, according to the Associated Press.
During the service that happened around the same time as Donald Trump’s inauguration, Bernice expressed to the congregation that we find ourselves in a period where arguments against understanding and awareness (woke) are used to create divisions among us and divert our focus from genuine issues of inequality.
Said Bernice: ‘To be woke is to be aware of oppression and commitment to justice.’
