Sex Pistols’ Steve Jones had issue with David Bowie’s last night as Ziggy Stardust
If you happened to witness David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust phase, you saw an act that significantly altered the course of human history. With his androgynous, space-alien rock character (“There’s a starman waiting in the sky!”), David Bowe set ablaze London and the world, igniting a spark of imagination and self-expression that will continue to influence generations for years to come.
Recently, Steve Jones, a member of the Sex Pistols, revealed in an interview with The Guardian that he took some equipment from David Bowie’s bands and even managed to grab the microphone that Bowie used during his second-to-last show of the Ziggy Stardust tour at London’s Hammersmith Odeon in 1973. In other words, Jones “borrowed” (or “stole”) these items from Bowie.
He mentioned that they played twice, and since they were scheduled for another performance the following night, they decided to keep their equipment set up overnight,” he said. “I was intimately familiar with the Hammersmith Odeon, often sneaking in there. I felt like a ghost of Hammersmith Odeon.
On the eve of the grand finale, Jones pilfered cymbals from the drummer’s set, a bass head from the amplifier of the bassist, and the microphone that once belonged to David Bowie: “I found his lipstick on the mic!” He shared this news with Bowie afterwards, and Bowie apparently found it amusing.
Ziggy Stardust is back in the collective consciousness after Steve Jones’ prank
Hey there fellow gamer, let me share a behind-the-scenes truth from the world of live music. You see, even the top-tier bands we all love can’t escape the occasional mishaps and surprises that come with touring. One moment everything’s smooth sailing, the next – whoa, hold on to your hats!
Now, imagine discovering something missing from the band’s gear during a show… You’d be as shocked as they are! It’s all about staying alert and ready for whatever comes next. That’s what I call keeping on your toes!
David Bowie, known for transforming into characters such as the gothic detective from the “Outside” album and his last persona, the Black Star, has consistently employed his unique style and imagination to convey the indescribable and unexplainable throughout his career.
Among all his artistic endeavors, Ziggy Stardust could be considered his most recognizable and impactful performance. Interestingly enough, while this album trails slightly behind his Let’s Dance album in terms of total sales with approximately 7.5 million copies sold, it remains a significant part of his legacy.
1973 marked a pivotal moment in rock history with Ziggy Stardust’s final show, much like David Bowie’s passing on January 10, 2016. Steve Jones is reviving this significant event, making it relevant once more to the global community. The character of Ziggy Stardust challenged and transformed my, as well as many others’, perspectives on the boundless potential of creativity in both heart and mind. I’m delighted that people are talking about it again.
