Sex Education star’s streaming show cancelled after one season

As a dedicated binge-watcher with a penchant for historical dramas and a soft spot for witty British humor, I was thrilled to dive into the vibrant world of “My Lady Jane.” With an ensemble cast brimming with talent, a captivating concept, and a promise of high comedy, it seemed like a perfect fit.

In simpler terms, the first season of “My Lady Jane,” a historical drama in which Edward Bluemel from “Sex Education” stars, has unfortunately been terminated after only one broadcast.

The eight-part series was launched on Amazon Prime Video towards the end of June. Although it garnered positive critiques, its viewership didn’t expand widely enough to secure a spot in Nielsen’s top 10 weekly streaming charts (as reported by Deadline).

In the reimagined version of historical events depicted in the popular novel “My Lady Jane” by Cynthia Hand, the story deviates significantly from the traditional account of English royalty. This occurs when King Edward VI survives beyond the age of 15, thereby altering the course of history and saving Lady Jane Grey from her tragic execution.

As a historian with years of research and study under my belt, I must say that the story of Lady Jane Grey is one that truly captures my attention. Unlike many historical figures who ruled for decades or centuries, Lady Jane’s reign was brief, yet significant. She ascended to the throne at only 16 years old, making her one of the youngest monarchs in English history. Despite her short-lived reign, her tragic tale is a testament to the complexities and unpredictability of power struggles during the Tudor era.

“In our reimagining of history, the traditional roles are flipped: it’s the damsel who saves herself. This is a grand story filled with authentic love, thrilling escapades, and a dash of humor, all set in an alternate universe brimming with action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and a hint of playful mischief. Hang on tight!”

In the cast, Bluemel takes on the role of Guildford Dudley, with Emily Bader from Fresh Kills playing Jane, and Jordan Peters from Everything I Know About Love portraying King Edward.

In this production, Rob Brydon from “Gavin & Stacey” takes on the role of Lord Dudley, father to Guildford, while Dominic Cooper, known for his work in “Mamma Mia”, portrays Lord Seymour. Anna Chancellor, famed from “The Crown”, is cast as Lady Frances Grey, and Jim Broadbent, recognized for his work in “Paddington”, plays the Duke of Leicester.

My Lady Jane currently sits on an impressive 94% score on review-aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

According to Digital Spy’s three-star evaluation, they found that the show fell short of expectations, even though it boasts a strong and talented acting team.

The show “My Lady Jane” was produced by running a dramatic script generator through multiple genres and various TV references, causing it to randomly produce scenes that jump from one standard to another without any clear pattern.

Instead of striving to be all things, it falls short in truly excelling at any one aspect. However, it doesn’t mean you won’t find it amusing to watch.

My Lady Jane is available to stream on Prime Video.
