Several games including Marvel Snap, Mobile Legends go dark as TikTok ban hits U.S.
Two games were unlikely victims of the TikTok ban today due to ties with ByteDance.
January 19th has rolled around, marking the day that the TikTok ban takes effect in the U.S. Many users took to various social platforms as the clock struck midnight, only to find a “TikTok is currently unavailable” message greeting them instead in the United States.
Unexpectedly, not just TikTok was affected by the ban, but other ByteDance products as well, such as Marvel Snap games and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang developed by MOONTON. American players have experienced similar prohibitions upon launching these titles, leaving them uncertain about when they can play again.
TikTok U.S. ban stretches into the gaming world as big name titles become locked
The ban on TikTok extends not only to the social media platform itself, but also to other companies under the umbrella of ByteDance and their respective products. This means that video editor CapCut, messaging apps, productivity tools, or any other services linked to ByteDance are currently unavailable in the United States.
In addition, you’ll find a variety of games such as the widely recognized card game “Marvel Snap,” published by Nuverse, and the MOBAs “Mobile Legends: Bang Bang” from MOONTON.
Or
Apart from that, you’ll discover popular choices like the Marvel Snap card game (published by Nuverse) and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MOONTON’s MOBAs).
Users have been encountering issues where they’re being logged out of their accounts and are presented with a message similar to one seen on TikTok. The message states: “A law prohibiting the use of Marvel Snap has been passed in the U.S., which means you currently can’t access Marvel Snap.
The final part of the message guarantees that efforts are being made to re-establish the service within the U.S., because the publisher responsible for releasing Marvel Snap in the area (Nuverse) is itself prohibited due to its ownership by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok.
In simpler terms, if you’re an American user, you won’t be able to update or find the Marvel Snap app in app stores because it has been banned. The developers, Second Dinner, along with Nuverse, were caught off guard by this ban and are currently working to resolve the issue and restore the service.
In response to an unexpected issue, Moonton, creators of the well-known mobile game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, announced that U.S. players would experience a temporary shutdown of the MOBA starting from January 19, 2025, due to factors beyond their control.
While ML:BB games in the U.S. remain suspended, MOONTON advises players to save their account and game data through the website. They are actively investigating options to reintroduce the game in the future, but no specific return date has been set yet.
According to an NBC News interview, President-elect Donald Trump expressed his intention to prolong the ban on TikTok for about 90 days. This extended ban could potentially cover not just TikTok, but other affected apps and games as well.
I feel the frustration of fellow American gamers who’ve spent their hard-earned cash on in-game purchases, only to find themselves locked out and needing workarounds like VPNs just to get our hands on those items we paid for. It’s disheartening to say the least.
Esports.gg will update as the story develops. Stay tuned for more on the TikTok ban.
