Seth Rogen‘s reboot of an underrated superhero series is getting a cautious update.
Seth Rogen is currently enjoying a career high, largely thanks to the popular Apple TV+ comedy, The Studio. He’s won four Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a Critics’ Choice Award for the show, which he also helped create. Beyond acting, Rogen is a successful producer, with credits including the hit series The Boys, Invincible, and Pam & Tommy.
While on the red carpet at the Saturn Awards, Jim Cummings, the original voice of Darkwing Duck, spoke with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan about the upcoming Disney+ reboot, which is being executive produced by Seth Rogen. Cummings shared his thoughts on the show’s return and how it compares to the often-overlooked series from the early 1990s. Here’s what he had to say:
Jim Cummings said it was fantastic and long awaited, and he’s glad everyone involved is still doing well. He mentioned his friend Seth Rogen will be a key player in what’s happening, so people should keep an eye out for updates.
ScreenRant: Is it the same vibe, tone, or has it updated? Is it different?
We’ve only done one spin-off so far, but if something’s working well, there’s no need to change it. Gosalyn, the character, has gotten older, which is a new development. Keep an eye out for more news!
Most people remember Darkwing Duck from its Saturday morning run on ABC. The show follows Drake Mallard, a regular duck who leads a double life as the superhero Darkwing Duck. With the help of his clumsy but loyal sidekick, Launchpad McQuack, and while raising his adopted daughter, Darkwing tries to be a famous hero – and a good dad – often with hilarious results.
Darkwing Duck aired for 91 episodes and won an Annie Award for Michael Cummings’s voice acting as the main character. The show was also nominated for an Annie Award as the best animated television program. While popular when it first came out, Darkwing Duck has become even more highly regarded over time and is now considered one of the best animated series of the 1990s.
A new version of Darkwing Duck was first discussed in November 2020, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg producing through their Point Grey Pictures company. It was one of the initial shows planned for Disney+, which began streaming in November 2019. While the character has appeared in comics and as part of the DuckTales series, this reboot aimed to bring a fresh take to the classic hero.
The project is progressing more slowly than expected, but it’s still moving forward. There have been some changes to the creative team and writers, but thankfully, Cummings will be back. Tad Stones, the series creator, is also contributing as a consultant.
Seth Rogen recently revived The Muppets for Disney+, and a reboot of Darkwing Duck feels like a more manageable project. Despite not being as widely known as The Muppets, everyone working on the new series seems dedicated to honoring the original character, Drake Mallard, and his superhero persona.
