The long-running and much-loved children’s show, Sesame Street, is getting a fresh update. It’s been a difficult year for the show and its familiar Muppet characters, who faced the possibility of being cancelled.
Late last year, HBO Max decided not to renew Sesame Street for another season. Shortly after, President Trump canceled $1.1 billion in funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which helps support the show (according to APNews). Now, though, Sesame Street has some positive news to share.
Sesame Street Season 56 Debuts On Netflix And PBS Kids On November 10
On May 19, 2025, it was revealed that Sesame Street will stream on Netflix. Starting then, new episodes will be available on both Netflix and PBS at the same time. Plus, Netflix will add 90 hours of classic Sesame Street content to its library.
The show’s 56th season will start on November 10th and will be available to watch on both PBS and Netflix at the same time. With Netflix already offering a lot of kids’ content, adding Sesame Street is expected to make it even more appealing to families with young children.
Why HBO Max Passed On Sesame Street In 2024
Sesame Street began streaming on HBO Max in 2016, following an agreement between PBS and HBO in 2015 (according to the New York Times). Because of budget concerns, PBS allowed HBO to have exclusive streaming rights to new episodes of Sesame Street. After nine months, those episodes would then become available for free on PBS.
After the initial agreement finished in 2021, new episodes of Sesame Street started airing on PBS before becoming available on HBO. This partnership helped Sesame Street make more episodes each season and launch two new shows: The-Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo and Mecha Builders.
HBO has decided not to continue producing new seasons of Sesame Street after its 55th season. A representative explained that the network is concentrating on content geared towards adults and families, and Sesame Street doesn’t currently fit that direction (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter). However, past episodes of Sesame Street will remain available on Max until 2027.
Sesame Street Season 56 Will Be A Reimagined Show
Sesame Street’s 56th season is bringing some exciting changes! According to Sesame Workshop, viewers will finally get to see inside the famous 123 Sesame Street apartment. Plus, the Muppets will be talking directly to the audience, and there will be more animated clips than ever before.
According to a recent announcement, even though Sesame Street is moving to Netflix, it will still focus on teaching children about important values like love, friendship, and kindness – “something we all need more of now,” the announcement states.
