‘Sesame Street’ finds a new streaming home on Netflix

Elmo, Big Bird and the rest of the Sesame Street gang are moving into the Netflix neighborhood.

This year, the entertainment company based in Los Gatos, California is set to launch the 56th season of a cherished preschool program on their streaming service, as well as 90 hours of classic episodes from previous seasons. They made this announcement on Monday.

The action was taken several months following Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to discontinue their collaboration with Sesame Workshop, a nonprofit organization, as part of an effort to reduce expenses, marking the end of a decade-long partnership between the two.

One thing that won’t change: ‘Sesame Street’ will still be shown on PBS stations in the U.S., and can also be found on their digital platforms. PBS has been a broadcasting partner for ‘Sesame Street’ since it first started with puppets back in 1969.

Via the agreement with Sesame Workshop, Netflix obtains exclusive global first-run rights for the show. This means that new episodes will become accessible at the same time across all regions of the world on Netflix. The specifics regarding licensing fees were not revealed. Additionally, the episodes will also be available simultaneously on PBS stations in the United States.

Hollywood Inc.

About a decade back, HBO provided a vital financial aid for Sesame Street’s continued episode production. However, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that they will no longer be funding new first-run episodes following the end of this current season.

Netflix announced that the upcoming season, divided into three installments, will feature some modifications in its format and bring back beloved segments like “Elmo’s World” and “Cookie Monster’s Food Truck.” The episodes are now designed around a single 11-minute narrative, catering to the shorter focus spans of younger audiences.

The agreement perfectly suited Netflix, now recognized as the primary choice for streaming content catering to almost all demographics.

The company said kids and family programming represents 15% of Netflix’s total viewing.

Television

In its 55th season, the long-standing children’s television program will air on Thursday amidst periods of change. However, its commitment to enlightening its youthful audience stays constant.
