‘Seriously ill’ rock legend rushed to hospital as band make heartbreaking show announcement
A renowned rock musician, gravely unwell, was urgently taken to the hospital, leading the band to make a deeply sad public statement on a Wednesday evening.
James Prime, 64, co-founder and keyboardist of Deacon Blue, is currently undergoing care.
The group, consisting of singers Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh, along with drummer Dougie Vipond, guitarist Gregor Philp, and bassist Lewis Gordon, announced that their performances will continue as planned.
It is unclear why James is in hospital, although he is currently in intensive care.
On Instagram, they posted a message saying, ‘We’d like to update you on our friend, Jim.’

The group went on to say: “Regrettably, he’s critically ill and receiving treatment in the hospital at present. We kindly invite everyone to send their best wishes to him and share their affection.
Yesterday, we had a conversation with Jim regarding Deacon Blue’s upcoming plans for the remainder of the year. He urged us to maintain love in our actions and offered his approval for the events to proceed, despite the temporary replacement of James Miller Prime.
As a dedicated follower, I, along with Jim’s family, extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every nurse, doctor, and ICU team member who has tirelessly provided care, demonstrated exceptional professionalism, and shown immense compassion throughout this journey.
‘With love, Ricky, Lorraine, Dougie, Gregor, Lewis and Tom.’
Deacon Blue are set to head of on their tour, The Great Western Road Trip, in September.
They will perform at Liverpool Arena on September 19, marking the start of a 15-date tour that concludes in Glasgow on October 11.
The tour corresponds to their most recent album with the identical title, which came out in March, accompanied by a brief series of theater performances.
This year marks four decades since the band initially came together, and it comes after their 2021 album titled “Riding on the Tide of Love.

In a statement prior to his tour, Ricky expressed his affection for the concept that a circus arriving in a town represents a fleeting presence, introducing a touch of enchantment amidst an otherwise ordinary location, only to eventually vanish.
‘The live experience is remarkably like real life, yet it’s fleeting, leaving an impact that vanishes as soon as the performance ends. People let go of their reservations during this time, and it’s a unique moment that’s truly special. That’s what makes it so captivating.’
We’ll be hosting two distinct events. One is an ever-changing exhibition where we’ll occasionally unveil delightful surprises to keep things fresh.
As a devoted fan, I’d say I relish the opportunity to perform in more intimate venues. These spaces allow us to showcase aspects of our craft that might not shine as brightly on larger stages. We get to introduce tunes from our latest album and even revisit tracks we haven’t played before, making each performance unique and special.
Additionally, we often create unforgettable evenings during our performances at large venues. We tailor our shows to match the location where we’re performing, and our goal is always to make it the best night each audience member has ever experienced. Each performance should be nothing short of exceptional.
