Serial buyer Danny Wallis arrives for auction day at The Block as the IT entrepreneur promises to buy up big at the grand finale

Danny Wallis, known for his lavish purchases on The Block, looked happy and chatted with other bidders and buyer’s agents at the show’s final auction in Daylesford on Saturday.

The IT entrepreneur from Melbourne, famous for his aggressive bidding and lavish spending, looked sharp and self-assured. He wore a crisp white blazer over a navy vest, with black pants, sneakers, and a black riding cap.

He seemed to be having a great time, talking and laughing with the other people bidding all day long.

He was a real standout at the event, thanks to his friendly personality and contagious laugh.

I’m a huge fan of the show, and I’ve always been fascinated by Wallis! Everyone calls him the ‘eccentric buyer,’ and it’s easy to see why – he just loves unique properties. What’s even more amazing is that he’s reportedly worth over $120 million, which means he can pretty much buy whatever catches his eye without a second thought. It gives him so much freedom when he’s looking for his next project!

In September 2020, he gained attention after selling his IT company, DWS, to a large technology firm in India for $126 million.

He’s since become a frequent attendee at The Block auctions, famous for spending millions on properties without a second thought.

Today was a major milestone for all five teams – they listed their renovated homes for sale, hoping to earn a good profit.

Before the auction, people worried it might not go well. The high asking prices for the homes in Daylesford seemed surprisingly expensive, causing concern.

Earlier this year, the creators of these five projects announced they were aiming to sell them for between $3 and $3.3 million.

The listed prices are extremely high and don’t reflect the actual cost of homes in this Victorian town, where houses are much more affordable – about a quarter of the asking price.

Recent data from PropTrack shows the average home price in Daylesford is about $820,000, down 7.1 percent from last year.

Additionally, the listed prices were four times higher than what similar homes actually sold for, raising serious questions about whether any would sell or achieve record-breaking prices.

Kim McQueen, from McQueen Real Estate, told realestate.com.au that, to her knowledge, only one house in Daylesford has ever sold for $3 million or more.

The realtor handling Robby and Mat’s house sale didn’t seem confident many people would bid at the auction.

Okay, so I’ve been following the luxury regional property market obsessively, and honestly? It’s TINY. Seriously, there are hardly any people who can just casually drop $3 million or more on a house outside of the major cities. It’s a super exclusive club, and finding a buyer is a real challenge!

We currently have five houses next to each other, all priced at over $3 million, and selling them will be a challenge.

Before the Daylesford auction, many people were talking about whether Adrian Portelli, a frequent bidder at these events, would be attending.

Back in July, host Scott Cam sent a blunt warning to Portelli ahead of the season premiere.

During an interview on the Nova 96.9 radio show Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie, he pleaded with Portelli to skip this year’s auction so that other people would have an opportunity to buy a home.

We told Adrian we’d prefer if he didn’t attend next year, but ultimately it’s his decision. Since it’s a public auction, he’s free to do as he pleases, as we understand.

He initially said he wouldn’t be able to make it, but there’s still a chance he will. We’re offering parents the chance to try building a house on The Block.

‘If Adrian comes and wants to buy the lot of them, well, that rules them out,’ Scott said.

In the 2024 finale of The Block, Portelli made history by buying all five properties for an impressive $15 million.

He made Maddy and Charlotte Harry the youngest people ever to win by purchasing their house for $3.5 million.
