Serena Williams has officially become a part-owner of Toronto’s inaugural WNBA team.
Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, revealed her latest venture on social media: she’s set to become part of the Toronto Tempo ownership group, right before their inaugural season. In her post, Williams is depicted playing with a tennis ball that transforms into an official WNBA basketball, accompanied by the caption, “New Playground, New Challenge.” She expressed her enthusiasm for this opportunity in a statement, stating, “This isn’t merely about basketball; it’s about highlighting the true worth and potential of female athletes. I have consistently advocated that women’s sports are a smart investment. I am thrilled to collaborate with Larry [Tanenbaum] and all Canadians in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.
Toronto Tempo, predominantly owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures headed by Larry Tanenbaum, is set to debut in 2026. Tanenbaum also chairs Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, a company that owns various sports franchises such as the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, and MLS’ Toronto FC. The WNBA team, under leadership of Teresa Resch, will be the 15th in the league.
In his statement about Williams joining the ownership team, Tanenbaum called Serena Williams an icon, role model, and a driving force for change globally. He noted that her remarkable success is a result of her diligence, perseverance, and unwavering determination in the face of numerous obstacles. In terms of values, she embodies everything Tempo stands for – we are incredibly proud to have Serena as part of our team. With Tempo, Williams continues to diversify her sports ownership portfolio, which already includes stakes in Miami Dolphins, Angel City FC, and Los Angeles Golf Club.
