As a fervent admirer of resilience and determination, I find myself deeply moved by the stories of individuals who have faced adversity with unwavering fortitude, and Alexis Ohanian is one such person. His recent revelation about his battle with Lyme disease serves as yet another testament to his indomitable spirit.

Alexis Ohanian, the husband of Serena Williams, disclosed that he had a procedure to take out some questionable growths in his thyroid, which might have developed into cancer.

41-year-old Reddit co-creator announced the news on Instagram during Thanksgiving, sharing a hospital picture along with cute images of his 7-year-old daughter Olympia and 15-month-old daughter Adira, who he has with the renowned tennis player.

For the past four years, I’ve been monitoring some questionable growths on my thyroid. More recently, I underwent surgery to remove half of it, as Ohanian clarified.

“The lumps seemed to grow larger, and the recent biopsy suggested they could become malignant. Unfortunately, my mother had breast cancer at about this age (41), and later succumbed to brain cancer several years on. I can’t stand cancer.

He went on to express his gratitude, noting that the surgery went smoothly.

I didn’t want to leave anything to chance, so I’m especially thankful this year. This morning, I received a call confirming that the half of my thyroid that was surgically removed contained numerous suspicious growths, which had a high likelihood of developing into cancer.

Despite joking that he had skipped his regular weightlifting regimen for a fortnight, Ohanian offered an encouraging update instead.

It’s been tough, I must admit, having to avoid lifting weights for two whole weeks. However, I’ll resume my workouts again next week. This week, I had the pleasure of taking my daughters to Disney World, making life truly delightful.

He ended his post with a reminder to other men: ‘To my fellow dads — make those doctor’s appointments. Especially if y’all are dads. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.’

In July, Ohanian shared that he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease, an unexpected health revelation for him.

On Twitter Tuesday, he shared details about his health condition in several posts, mentioning that following various medical treatments, physicians informed him about the diagnosis.

The tech entrepreneur, who is also a father to two children with the tennis star, shared that he underwent comprehensive health examinations and was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Quite surprising, as he had no noticeable symptoms, but he plans to seek treatment for it.

Ohanian elaborated on the specific aspects of his health assessment: ‘The good cholesterol levels are quite low, while the bad cholesterol is acceptable. I need to focus on improving it. On the bright side: a total of 822 ng/dL and 162 ng/dL free testosterone.’

Ohanian expressed surprise at receiving the diagnosis despite having a familial connection to the illness, as he isn’t usually at risk due to his location.

Ohanian shared that he has someone dear to him who experienced symptoms related to a certain condition several years ago, yet they couldn’t determine what it was until a test confirmed it. Fortunately, they managed to treat it effectively afterwards. This discovery, however, came as quite a shock since they rarely venture into wilderness or the northeast regions.

Ohanian mentioned that he planned to get some antibiotics to treat his illness, and he expressed optimism by saying, “I can’t be kept down!” accompanied by an image of the Tick cartoon character, suggesting resilience and determination.

As a concerned follower, I’d like to clarify that while I share my thoughts and experiences, I am absolutely not providing medical advice about Lyme disease or any other health matters. Always consult a healthcare professional for accurate information and guidance.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Lyme disease is an ailment that’s triggered by borrelia bacteria. Typically, humans contract this disease through a tick bite, as these ticks are infected with the bacteria.

The clinic pointed out that ticks carrying borrelia bacteria are widespread across much of the U.S., but Lyme disease is particularly prevalent in the upper Midwest, Northeast, and mid-Atlantic regions domestically. It’s also common in Europe and south central as well as southeastern Canada.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: To minimize your chances of encountering ticks, it’s wise to steer clear of environments that harbor these tiny critters, such as lush grasslands, dense shrubbery, or wooded areas. The most effective strategy for prevention? Simply be mindful and take precautions when spending time outdoors, ensuring you don’t get bitten by ticks.

According to the CDC, approximately 476,000 individuals might receive a diagnosis and treatment for Lyme disease annually within the U.S. It’s also important to note that this figure includes people who are treated presumptively due to symptoms suggesting Lyme disease, but may not actually have it.

According to the official statement from the government agency, many instances of this disease can typically be effectively managed with a course of antibiotics lasting between 10-14 days. Treating it promptly during the initial phases often results in a swift and full recuperation.

At certain instances, the illness has sparked debates, as the American Medical Association reported in January 2023 that there’s a scarcity of evidence-backed advice on caring for individuals dealing with ongoing symptoms, and an increasing amount of incorrect information complicates treatment.

In some cases, patients might think their ongoing symptoms are caused by Lyme disease, although there’s no proof they’ve ever contracted it.

Dr. Grace Marx, a specialist in epidemiology working for the CDC’s Vector-Borne Disease department, stated that it can be challenging to diagnose accurately when patients exhibit atypical symptoms associated with Lyme disease but continue to experience prolonged issues.

Marx pointed out that the phrase “chronic Lyme disease” isn’t always clearly defined and may be employed in a wide manner by both patients, medical professionals, and the general populace. It frequently encompasses individuals who were not definitively diagnosed with acute Lyme disease.

Ohanian is among several notable figures who have openly discussed their struggles with Lyme disease, a health issue they’ve encountered.

I’m part of a group that includes Yolanda Hadid, a former cast member of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and her daughter, Bella Hadid, the model. Both of them have openly shared their struggles with this condition, adding their voices to the larger conversation about it.

In 2021, Yolanda confided that she had experienced profound depression due to a series of health issues for nearly ten years.

In her interview with British Vogue in February 2021, Yolanda shared, “I struggle to find words for the depth of darkness, agony, and torment I experienced daily.” She further added, “This illness left me utterly broken.

Last year, Bella shared that she completed a 100-day treatment course as part of her 15-year struggle against a specific health issue.

In January 2020, musical artist Justin Bieber announced that he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease following criticism about his appearance.

In a recent Instagram post, the Grammy-winning artist clarified that although many people have been commenting about Justin Bieber looking unwell, on drugs like meth, they may not be aware that he has recently been diagnosed with Lyme disease. Furthermore, he is also dealing with a severe case of chronic mono, which has impacted his skin, cognitive functions, energy levels, and overall health.

In 2010, I was given a diagnosis that I shared with The Hollywood Reporter in 2011 – a health condition that has since become part of my journey.

Ben Stiller shared that he acquired the condition a few years back in Nantucket, Massachusetts. He experienced swelling in his knee, and doctors were puzzled about the cause until they diagnosed it as Lyme disease. Although he is now symptom-free, Lyme disease remains in his system, making it a challenging condition to manage.

In an Instagram post made in September 2020, comedian Amy Schumer announced that she had contracted Lyme disease and shared with her audience the medications she was currently using to treat it.

Ever experienced Lyme disease this summer? Unfortunately, I fell victim to it myself, currently on a course of doxycycline. I suspect I’ve had it for quite some time now. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! I’m curious, can one indulge in a glass (or two) of wine while treating Lyme disease? I’m aware of the sun avoidance, and I’m also incorporating some herbal remedies from Cape Cod called ‘Lyme-2’. Just wanted to share that I’m feeling better and am excited about my journey towards recovery!

Last week, at the ESPYs in Los Angeles, Ohanian and Williams (who have two daughters: six-year-old Olympia and eleven-month-old Adira River) attended the event, with Williams taking on the role of host.

The tennis superstar made headlines after she took a jab at NFL kicker Harrison Butker during the ceremony.

She made the comments in the wake of a controversial graduation speech he gave May 11 at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, touching on sensitive topics ranging from abortion to Pride Month to women in the workforce.
