Sentry: The New Most Powerful Superhero in the MCU Revealed!

For quite some time now, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been engaged in a lively discussion over who among their superheroes is the strongest. Notable candidates have included Thor, especially when he got Stormbreaker, Captain Marvel, Hulk, and Scarlet Witch. However, as we move into Phase 6, Marvel Studios has put an end to this popular debate by redefining the power dynamics within the MCU.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, let me tell you that Robert “Bob” Reynolds, also known as Sentry in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts, is now wielding the title of the MCU’s most potent character – a fact that holds significant weight for various reasons. For starters, Sentry isn’t one of the original or even seasoned Avengers, making him a fresh addition to the team. But what truly sets this powerhouse apart is that he doesn’t fully command his abilities. The potential repercussions if he unleashes them could be catastrophic.

Eric Pearson, a screenwriter for Marvel Studios, disclosed the transformation in a video feature, according to Gizmodo. In this video, he discussed Sentry’s intricate background and complexities before verifying that Lewis Pullman’s portrayal of Sentry is now recognized as the MCU’s “strongest superhero.

The Sentry, it seems, is either the result of an accidental success or a failed experiment. Regardless, he’s ended up as one of the most powerful superheroes, unaware of his own might.

In the Marvel Universe, the character Robert Reynolds’ Sentry possesses immense power, yet this strength brings its own complications. While acting as a superhero, Sentry unwittingly assumed the role of the villain known as The Void.

In Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, we encounter Robert “Bob” Reynolds, a previous drug addict who was part of Project Sentry – an endeavor aimed at creating the perfect superhero. Unlike his fellow subjects, Bob survived but with erased memories. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine later discovers him, equips him with a suit, and designates him as Sentry. However, his sinister counterpart, Void, eventually surfaces and causes destruction by dragging individuals into its consciousness.

Following the Thunderbolts assisting Bob in escaping the Void, an incident he subsequently can’t recall, he chooses to stay with the team that Val renames as the New Avengers. However, it is disclosed in the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts, that Bob deliberately refrains from utilizing his Sentry powers to prevent the Void from resurfacing.

On Tuesday, July 1st, you’ll be able to digitally buy “Thunderbolts”*. Lewis Pullman’s character Sentry, along with the rest of the “Thunderbolts*” cast, has been confirmed for “Avengers: Doomsday”.

Is Sentry the New Captain Marvel?

It’s noteworthy that Marvel Studios has chosen to introduce Sentry as a prominent character in the MCU, given the multitude of powerful heroes and abilities expected to be present in Avengers: Doomsday. This will help fans understand the pecking order among these superpowered individuals before they watch the movie.

Nonetheless, Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts have encountered this powerful hero structure before, most notably with Captain Marvel, portrayed by Brie Larson. Carol Danvers’ role in defeating Thanos was hinted at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but she played a minor part throughout Endgame, predominantly during the final battle. This absence may have been due to her immense power, which left few obstacles for her or other MCU heroes, making her storyline on Earth somewhat frustrating. In essence, her abilities often meant there was little conflict for her character.

Marvel Studios’ decision to declare Sentry as their most potent character yet, only to keep him out of the spotlight, seems reminiscent of a common pattern. However, instead of following the predictable route, let’s hope Marvel Studios will seize the opportunity presented by a character who “unintentionally gained supreme power” and doesn’t have control over it.

Previously, Thunderbolts astonished viewers with its storyline emphasizing character development, an aspect where Captain Marvel faced some challenges. Here’s hoping that Sentry will serve as a model for creating a superhero with immense power, yet maintaining high stakes, without compromising on the depth of the characters.
