Senator Lidia Thorpe turned heads in Parliament on Tuesday with a striking outfit that many people compared to a well-known Australian icon.

The 52-year-old politician made a striking appearance in parliament wearing a bright, form-fitting aqua-blue dress that really stood out.

Oh my god, her hair! It was just… perfect. So sleek and straight, falling right to her shoulders. And that fringe! It was sharp and just grazed her forehead, and it instantly made me think of Gina Riley from Kath & Kim – she totally channeled that iconic look! I was obsessed, seriously obsessed.

Sky News reporter Rita Panahi noticed her striking look and jokingly compared her to the famous character Gina Riley in a post online.

‘Senator Lidia Thorpe channelling Kim,’ Panahi captioned the post.

A funny post grabbed the attention of a senator known for speaking her mind. She shared it on her social media, adding a playful comment: ‘I’m not a homemaker, I’m a powerhouse!’ She noted the post highlighted two strong, iconic figures.

Thanks, Rita Panahi. I generally wouldn’t say anything nice about Sky News, but you’ve actually made a good point this time!

People on social media reacted positively, with one X user writing, ‘This isn’t the win you’re expecting, haha! Kath and Kim are Australian legends, and being compared to them is a compliment.’

I don’t care for either the original poster or this topic, but being compared to an Australian icon like Kim is always a good thing, in my opinion.

One more said: ‘I actually was impressed with her response.’

It was revealed in January why Gina Riley, the star of Kath & Kim, unexpectedly quit her successful career.

The 64-year-old Australian comedian recently revealed in an old interview that she intentionally stepped back from public life to experience a more ordinary lifestyle.

Gina started by saying that, even though her job puts her in the public eye, she doesn’t want to be a public figure as she gets older. She admitted that she actually leads a pretty normal, uneventful life outside of work.

Gina explained that she and her “Kath & Kim” co-star, Jane Turner, 64, always felt out of place with the trappings of fame and never really adjusted to that lifestyle.

‘We are more observers. We are not people who super belong,’ she said. 

As someone who’s followed creative careers for years, it’s always interesting to see how journeys unfold. This performer, originally from Melbourne, had a really solid run in film and TV from the early ’80s right up to 2007. That’s when the sitcom she developed with her partner, Turner, wrapped up after a successful four seasons. It’s a testament to consistent work and a great creative partnership!

Since then, Gina hasn’t been in the public eye much, though she did reappear as Kim Day in the 2012 film Kath and Kimderella.

Gina is now prioritizing her family and enjoying time with her husband, Rick McKenna, who works as a television producer.

The popular comedy show Kath & Kim, which aired on Australian channels ABC and Channel Seven from 2002 to 2007, featured Jane Turner, Glenn Robbins, Magda Szubanski, and Peter Rowsthorn in its cast.

The sitcom produced two spin-off movies: Da Kath & Kim Code (2005) and Kath and Kimderella (2012).

The show was famous for its funny appearances by big celebrities, like Shane Warne, Kylie Minogue, and Michael Bublé.
