Selena Gomez’s Voice Change: Lupus Suspected as Her Connection to Health Woes

Fans of Selena Gomez have noticed how the singer’s voice has changed dramatically over the years. 

32-year-old artist and actress initially gained prominence portraying Gianna on Barney & Friends in 2002, followed by her role in the popular Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place, eventually establishing a thriving solo career for herself.

For quite some time, Selena has been under public scrutiny. However, it’s her recent appearances, such as during carpet interviews at the Golden Globes and while hosting at the 97th Oscars, that have raised eyebrows among fans, due to them noticing a change in her voice. This alteration left many wondering about the reason behind it.

In a message to X, they expressed: “I’ve often found Selena Gomez’s voice seems to have a bit of a stuffy quality”; or “I never realized Selena Gomez’s voice had that particular tone.

In a different phrasing, someone commented, ‘I heard it’s related to her lupus’, whereas some others pointed out that it might be due to her growing older.

In 2015, Selena was identified as having the illness and later disclosed that she underwent chemotherapy for its treatment.

One in every 10,000 individuals develops Lupus, an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy body organs and tissues. Interestingly, about 9 out of 10 affected individuals are women.

Individuals suffering from this ailment frequently encounter periods when their symptoms such as joint and muscle discomfort, intense exhaustion, and skin rashes intensify significantly. These spells may persist for several weeks or even longer.

As per Healthline, Lupus may lead to vocal tiredness, hoarseness resulting from inflammation in the vocal cords or laryngeal tissue, changes in voice quality, and a decrease in vocal volume.

In a popular TikTok video with over 1.9 million views, a user edited together clips from various years featuring Gomez, highlighting the noticeable change in her speaking style.

In the initial segment of the video, we see Gomez – then a young teen – expressing great enthusiasm about the possibility of appearing as a guest star on Gossip Girl in the future.

As she talked, the actor vividly showed her enthusiasm and liveliness while detailing every reason she adored the CW series, featuring Blake Lively and Leighton Meester.

In the following video, she spoke with deep emotion during an acceptance speech at the American Music Awards in 2016, when she was just 24 years old, addressing the topic of depression.

After her recovery, there was a noticeable change in her conversational tone, probably due to nervousness, as she openly discussed her bodily and mental wellbeing concerns.

In 2014, she admitted for the first time that she was completely truthful with everyone, she stated. It’s likely that many of you are already familiar with much of her life, whether she found it agreeable or not.

She went on to say: ‘I needed to pause as I held it all within, shattered on the inside, ensuring I didn’t disappoint you. However, by holding it together so tightly, I ended up disappointing myself instead.’

At that point in time, she decided to admit herself to a healthcare center for mental wellness, as a result of which she postponed the remaining 34 concerts of her Revival world tour.

In the following segment, the video skipped ahead to the year 2024, where Gomez found himself being interviewed by a stylishly young journalist named Taylen Biggs, who was only eleven years old at that time.

Emilia Pérez, once a shining newcomer, appeared far more reserved than usual when discussing her role in the public eye.

She mentioned, as she partially hid her face with her left hand, “It seems like others may know too much about me.” She added, “I’ve had to adapt to the realization that my life is not just about me, but can sometimes be filled with a great deal of commotion.

A video that showcased the noticeable change in Gomez’s speech throughout the years was from his latest interview with Access Hollywood at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards.

In January, the interview left some of her followers concerned because they believed she seemed disoriented and was speaking with a slur.

‘It looks like it’s painful for her to talk at the end clip,’ one TikTok user commented. 

It was suggested that the voice alteration might stem from a mix of her medications and lupus, or perhaps overcoming anxiety.

In her explanation, she mentioned that she has undergone two kidney transplants, currently uses an ostomy bag, and likely takes medication similar to Selena’s. She further expressed that the idea of being on a red carpet filled with flashing lights and loud noises is beyond overwhelming for her, even in ordinary day-to-day tasks becomes challenging under transplant medications, so attending a hectic red carpet event would be unbearable.

A different user stated: ‘Selena often experiences some cognitive impairment due to an autoimmune disorder. Despite this, she’s making every effort to lead a typical life given her situation. It becomes increasingly challenging to control these types of health issues as one grows older past the age of 30.’
