As a seasoned gamer of life with a penchant for movies that push boundaries and leave me pondering long after the credits roll, Selena Gomez’s latest offering, Emilia Pérez, has certainly caught my attention. The Spanish-language musical, which received an 11-minute standing ovation at Cannes earlier this year, is now available on Netflix.

In this Spanish-speaking musical, Zoe Saldaña takes on the role of a lawyer who gets abducted to assist a Mexican drug lord (Karla Sofía Gascón) in undergoing gender-confirmation surgery. Gomez portrays the drug lord’s spouse, Jessi.
Today (November 13), the movie that garnered an 11-minute long standing ovation following its debut at Cannes earlier this year, has been made available on the streaming platform.
The film “Emilia Pérez” has garnered mostly favorable comments from critics, securing it a “Fresh” rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 148 reviews at the time of writing. Additionally, it is one of the top award contenders for this season.
According to Digital Spy’s critique, the movie can be seen as a film that people either adore or find disappointing. At certain moments, it might appear absurdly over-the-top, but it consistently showcases boldness, originality, risk-taking, and visually captivating scenes.
In a chat prior to the Netflix premiere, Gomez shared that she felt “anxious” about taking on a musical role.
“I had never really performed a musical and let alone danced in a movie like this,” she explained.
Initially, I felt quite apprehensive. To be honest, I didn’t recognize myself while performing. It seems as though that person is a stranger to me now.
The Grammy-nominated artist likewise disclosed that she needed to adapt her singing and dancing approach to suit the character she portrayed.
She explained, “I needed to completely break away from my previous performing methods and truly embody Jessi, expressing her despair and agitation through physical actions. This approach was quite distinct from anything I’d done before.
