Selena Gomez reveals what she had to change for Netflix’s Emilia Pérez

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for both music and cinema, I eagerly awaited the release of “Emilia Pérez” on Netflix. Having grown up watching Selena Gomez dominate the pop scene and Zoe Saldaña conquer the big screen, it was thrilling to see them join forces in this unique Spanish-language musical crime drama.

Selena Gomez was “nervous” about performing in Netflix’s award-winning new movie Emilia Pérez.

This Spanish-language musical crime drama revolves around a lawyer portrayed by Zoe Saldaña from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who gets abducted to aid a Mexican drug lord, played by Karla Sofía Gascón, in undergoing gender-confirming surgery. In the series, the character acted by Only Murders in the Building’s Gomez portrays Jessie, the cartel leader’s wife, as her world spins out of control due to these events.

For Gomez, who’s known as a skilled vocalist and entertainer, this situation was a unique, distinctive encounter.

In an exclusive chat with Digital Spy, she admitted that she had never before participated in a musical production, let alone danced on screen for a film such as this.

She admitted she felt quite anxious. On stage, she didn’t seem to embody the person she is or was. To be honest, she doesn’t recognize herself in that persona anymore, she mentioned.

As a Grammy-nominated artist boasting more than a decade of live performance under her belt, Gomez found it necessary to adapt her singing and dancing approach to suit her role in the production titled “Emilia Pérez“.

To fully immerse myself into the character of Jessie, I needed to let go of my previous performance methods and instead, make her despair and anger manifest physically on stage.

“It was very different from what I’m used to.”

During a chat with Digital Spy, Selena Gomez and her co-star Zoe Saldaña expressed their eagerness for a role as demanding as the one they’re currently working on, using the term “craving” to describe their feelings.

Gomez stated that they were eagerly awaiting an escape, and indeed, this is precisely what happened.

She went on to say that, in truth, I believe it’s fair to conclude that each one of us was drawn to this for various motives. Yet, none of us anticipated it turning out as it has – what it currently represents.

As a diehard fan, I’ve always admired Zoe Saldana for her incredible work in blockbuster film series such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Avatar. However, it seems she yearned for a chance to rekindle her passion for dance and musical theater.

She made it clear that just because she wasn’t always joyful or thankful, it doesn’t mean she didn’t appreciate the chances she received throughout her career.

It seems that what you’re sharing matches perfectly with the type of content and tasks I usually engage with, when I am not creating them myself.

In addition to Karla Sofía Gascón, who portrays the main character, and Mexican actress Adriana Paz, the ensemble cast of the film “Emilia Pérez” received the award for Best Actress at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

This season, the movie crafted by French director Jacques Audiard is a strong candidate for numerous awards.

Emilia Pérez is released on Netflix on November 13.
