As a Puerto Rican woman with deep roots in my island home and a heart full of pride for its resilience and strength, I am deeply offended by the recent comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe. To reduce an entire territory, filled with vibrant culture, rich history, and courageous people, to a “floating island of garbage” is not only disrespectful but also ignorant.

At Donald Trump’s recent rally, it was Selena Gomez who became the most recent celebrity to address Tony Hinchcliffe’s contentious jest regarding Puerto Rico.

The actress, aged 32, expressed her firm opposition to any remarks made in a recent interview with Variety, following the comedian’s likening of Puerto Rico to a “drifting island of trash.

Selena, born in Texas with a family background of Mexican heritage, remarked, ‘I strongly identify with my community, indeed.’

The star recently shared a video of herself submitting her ballot. She explained she posted the clip because ‘people can sometimes forget that the one vote can change everything.’

Additionally, Emilia Perez’s fellow actor, Zoe Saldaña (aged 46), who hails from a Puerto Rican background, likewise voiced her opinions regarding Hinchcliffe’s comment.

It’s unfortunate that, in the year 2024, there is an alarming amount of poverty and lack of integrity among those we call leaders. What’s essential is choosing leaders who truly embody the qualities we value as human beings.

On Monday, Gomez deposited her formal voting ballot into a mailbox as she headed towards the Los Angeles premiere of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, where it was being shown.

She also matched her captivating red sequined Rodarte dress with a purse that complemented it, displaying her “I Voted” sticker proudly on it.

‘ITS TIME TO GO VOTE!!!’ she reminded her more than 58.2 TikTok followers.

She is now casting her ballot for the second time in a presidential election, having acknowledged in 2020 that she had once felt her vote was insignificant due to being a Democrat residing in a predominantly Democratic state.

She shared with Vogue that she was honest about her experience: it was her first time, something she hadn’t been embarrassed to admit. Moreover, she felt compelled to express this because for the first time in her life, she truly believed – and I can confirm this is true – that her vote mattered. Some individuals doubt the significance of their vote, thinking “What difference will it make?”, but not her.

While poking fun at celebrity Democrats, Hinchcliffe’s offbeat remark sparked major backlash.

A variety of celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Ricky Martin, expressed their backing for Harris after Hinchcliffe made a controversial remark during Trump’s lively rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday: “There seems to be an ocean-bound debris field floating around, and it appears to be known as Puerto Rico.

The humor fell flat with the audience, drawing criticism not just from Democrats and Republicans but also Trump’s team. In response, a group of Puerto Rican celebrities voiced their support for Harris and shared her proposals concerning Puerto Rico.

Martin, who boasts an impressive following of 18.6 million on Instagram and is renowned as a Puerto Rican superstar, promptly posted a video from Harris appealing to Puerto Rican voters, accompanied by a snippet of Hinchcliffe’s criticizing comments.

‘This is what they think of us,’ Martin wrote in Spanish. ‘Vote for @kamalaharris.’

Lopez posted the identical video along with Harris’ policy on Puerto Rico across numerous slides, reaching approximately 250 million people.

In a video posted on Instagram, Bad Bunny highlights that for Puerto Rican voters and Puerto Rico itself, the stakes are incredibly high in this upcoming election, as stated by Harris. It’s been verified that the artist, Bad Bunny, endorses Harris.

In another segment, the artist revealed Harris stating, ‘I’ll always remember Trump for what he failed to do, and what he didn’t do, when Puerto Rico required a compassionate and capable leader.’

“The man who provided towels for you but withheld financial aid during Hurricane Maria, and you still consider him your ally? Wake up! Vote!!! This is his true opinion about you.

Two Florida Republicans joined the condemnation for the joke, including Senator Rick Scott.

‘This joke bombed for a reason. It’s not funny and it’s not true. Puerto Ricans are amazing people and amazing Americans! I’ve been to the island many times. It’s a beautiful place,’ Scott wrote.

“It’s highly recommended for everyone to make a trip there! I am committed to assisting any Puerto Rican, whether they are residing in Florida or on the island, in any way possible.

Representative Maria Salazar expressed her dismay over Tony Hinchcliffe’s racially insensitive remark, referring to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of trash.” Such language doesn’t align with the principles of the Republican Party.

‘Puerto Rico sent 48,000+ soldiers to Vietnam, with over 345 Purple Hearts awarded. This bravery deserves respect,’ she added. ‘Educate yourself!

The normally pugnacious Trump campaign took the rare step of distancing itself from Hinchcliffe.

In her statement, senior advisor Danielle Alvarez clarified that the humor expressed doesn’t represent the beliefs or stance of President Trump or his campaign.
