Selena Gomez Fan Claps Back at Body Shamers: ‘Shut Up’ About Her Weight!

A lady who shares the same bacterial gut issue as Selena Gomez stated that it caused her to appear as if she were expecting, and she urged others to stop making comments about Selena’s physical appearance.

Actress and singer Gomez sparked rumors about her weight changes, noticeable at multiple high-profile events, leading some to guess she might have opted for a weight reduction injection such as Ozempic.

However, responding to a previously removed TikTok post from November 2024, the 32-year-old explained that the alterations in her body were attributed to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), a condition characterized by an excess of bacteria in the small intestine.

Gomez shared on social media: ‘This leaves me feeling unwell. I’ve been diagnosed with SIBO in my small intestine, which can cause flare-ups. Just because I don’t have the typical slim figure doesn’t mean it’s what I am. Period. I’m not a victim, I’m just a human being.’

The condition can cause symptoms like bloating, diarrhea and weight loss.

And like Gomez, Phoebe Lapine, 39, was diagnosed with SIBO in 2017.

Lapine experienced bloating, skin problems, and excessive belching due to her condition, which she empathizes with Gomez about, sharing this with DailyMail.com.

Phoebe, a food writer, from Brooklyn, New York, said: ‘I completely sympathize.

As a fellow individual navigating similar challenges, I too understand that she has shared her struggles with carrying a child on her own. Similarly, I found myself in a situation where I needed a surrogate for the birth of my child.

‘I then had the irony of looking like I was pregnant so often with this SIBO.

I deeply empathize with her on an emotional level, particularly because body-shaming is awful and it seems like she might have faced such negativity. On top of that, it’s likely that pregnancy rumors may have circulated, which can add another layer of distress.

‘I think it’s awful.

In the chronically ill community, there are numerous individuals whose bodies have often been subjected to comments, even when no physical attribute is immediately apparent. This can extend from discussions about weight loss to weight gain and beyond.

It’s often unclear the struggles people face privately, so let’s all try to be more understanding and refrain from unnecessary criticism.

In her twenties, Phoebe received a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a health issue characterized by damage to the thyroid gland.

She detailed her health issues as overpowering, encompassing feelings of extreme exhaustion, sleeplessness, weight increase, and skin irritation near her mouth.

Her persistent efforts to discover suitable information and remedies for her physical well-being ultimately resulted in the authorship of a book titled “The Wellness Project,” chronicling her health experiences.

However, she found herself dealing with distressing digestive issues once more, such as a noticeable increase in abdominal size due to bloating.

In my personal experience, the symptoms I encountered during my Hashimoto’s were distinctly unlike the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) I had previously known.

‘I was just so bloated and it never seemed to go away.

‘It was like there was a really uncomfortable inner tube in my abdomen.

Ever since I managed to bring my Hashimoto’s under wraps, my weight stayed fairly consistent – except for the fact that it seemed as though I was sporting a baby bump!

Overwhelmed by my frequent burping, especially following meals, I found myself seeking the advice of yet another medical professional. To my surprise, this visit revealed I had Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, or SIBO, sending me on an unexpected journey into a whole new realm.

The burping and bloating is caused by gas production in the small intestine.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my personal health journey that led me to discover the challenges of SIBO. It all started when Phoebe, in her own words, pointed out food poisoning, lupus, and stubborn stomach bugs as the triggers for this complex condition. These unwelcome visitors have certainly brought on their fair share of flare-ups, testing her strength and resilience.

She mentioned that it’s often a build-up of various factors, and sometimes, just one factor can serve as the spark that ignites everything.

Phoebe initially struggled to locate resources about SIBO, commenting that it required tracking down specialized professionals.

The research is available, yet many prominent figures within the medical community, such as gastrointestinal specialists, are hesitant to diagnose or develop treatment strategies for this condition, as they believe it hasn’t progressed sufficiently.

‘That’s really hard because there are those of us who are suffering.’

Phoebe started working on a new book titled “SIBO Made Simple” and also launched a podcast. On this podcast, she engaged in discussions with professionals from different sectors of the industry, focusing on topics related to the digestive system, autoimmune conditions, and overall health and wellness.

Phoebe stated, “There were absolutely no books on SIBO available and I recognized an opportunity in the market.” She added, “Each book I’ve authored is born out of a desire to provide the kind of resource I needed when confronting a particular issue.

I am extremely pleased with it, along with everything I’ve accomplished in this field. It would be wonderful if Selena could reach out to me – I’d be more than happy to share a copy with her.

Even though she’s managed to keep them in check, Phoebe carries the awareness that her distressing symptoms might resurface unexpectedly at any moment.

She mentioned that she has strived to maintain a steady mental state, regularly reminding herself that if the situation arises, she knows how to respond appropriately.

She related to Gomez’s experience with the press and comments on her body.

Phoebe said: ‘There’s definitely weight gain that can happen as a result of SIBO.

It seems likely that everyone is commenting on her visible bloating, a condition that becomes more noticeable in certain outfits, especially at events like the red carpet. This condition can sometimes be unpredictable, and it’s not always clear when a reaction might occur.

Phoebe aims to dispel the notion that Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) cannot be cured, as she assertively declares her success in managing it within a span of one year.

In the end, she shared that her encounter was quite simple. She underwent a single procedure and successfully eliminated Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).

‘But even with the most straightforward results like mine there’s still the healing phase.

She noted that recovery often requires more time compared to the initial treatment, especially when someone has been unwell and undiagnosed for an extended period. Prolonged SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) can lead to a significant amount of lingering damage in the gut.

Additionally, these treatments might occasionally lead to further harm or increased inflammation on their own.

I advise people to provide themselves with plenty of time and set realistic goals that it may take up to a year for them to feel like they are back to their usual selves again.

‘I would encourage people to do their homework and to know that there is hope.

Regardless of whether we continue to grapple with conditions causing bloating or Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth throughout our lives, there are temporary remedies available that can improve our comfort level and aid in maintaining a healthier gut. These solutions may contribute to an enhanced overall quality of life for us.
