Selena Gomez dishes on her relationship with boyfriend Benny Blanco and not being seen as a ‘victim’
In reflecting upon Selena Gomez’s remarkable journey, it is truly inspiring to witness her metamorphosis from a Disney darling to a multifaceted artist. Her life experiences have undeniably shaped her into an individual who fearlessly pursues her dreams and defies expectations.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Selena Gomez provided an uncommon glimpse into her private life, discussing topics ranging from her bond with Benny Blanco to issues concerning her mental well-being.
Although she began her career in the limelight at the age of 10 with Barney & Friends and later joined Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place at 13, this actress, now 32, maintains that she preserves a sense of privacy in her life.
She mentioned that she has specific destinations where she goes and remains undisturbed, such as her half-sister Gracie’s soccer matches. Only when she’s right smack in the middle of things does anyone bother her much, she clarified.
The Grammy nominee commented on managing tabloids and paparazzi by mentioning that she spends time with individuals not deeply involved in the entertainment industry.
Besides joking about it, she mentioned that she’s mastered the art of keeping a low profile during date nights. She often conceals her face under a scarf to prevent being snapped in photographs.
Nowadays, unlike before, Gomez openly expresses her comfort in sharing pictures and videos with Blanco, whom she started dating last year.
She expressed a sense of deep security and positivity about her current relationship, adding that she envisions a future with this individual. Furthermore, she mentioned that by showing some vulnerability, others are less likely to pursue her aggressively.
Still, she reminded fans that ‘there’s so much’ of her relationship that ‘people don’t see’ that’s just for her and Blanco.
Gomez additionally opened up to THR, expressing that shifting focus from singing to acting brought her a sense of ‘peace of mind’ or ‘mental well-being’.
She shared that discussing music which was once significant in her life but is no longer present, is incredibly challenging for her. Additionally, talking about herself is quite difficult and emotionally taxing.
In her recent press tour for the movie “Emilia Pérez”, the actress asserts that not a single personal question was posed to her during the event.
In every interview I’ve had for this film, no one has asked a personal question, and I’ve felt like I wanted to thank each reporter by kissing them on the mouth and expressing my gratitude because it’s been so refreshing, and I believe that creates a safer environment for me. (Gomez)
The songwriter behind “Who Says” attributed being a big sister as contributing to her ability to easily find happiness within herself.
She acknowledged the need to exhibit extraordinary resilience instead of yielding to the noise of others, she mentioned. Moreover, she has consistently strived to project strength while being open about vulnerabilities. Ultimately, her aim is to create a more positive environment for her.
When inquired about whether her 11-year-old sibling recognizes her celebrity status and achievements, Gomez mentioned that they generally remain unphased during their shared activities like bowling or visiting Target.
If we carry on with our actions, she has grown accustomed to them. It brings me pleasure whenever I hear her say something like, “I’m not particularly keen on doing what you do,” Gomez mentioned.
If Gracie eventually decides to pursue the same path, Gomez expresses that he’ll back whatever aspirations she has.
Reflecting on her past, the singer shared that she had known from a young age that she desired a career in the entertainment world. She expressed gratitude that her loved one didn’t perceive her life as glamorous or sparkling, but rather, they wished for that same lifestyle.
Gomez also stressed that she doesn’t ‘sulk’ in the idea that she missed out on being a kid.
In my younger days, acting gave me the sensation of fitting in. Despite being teased mercilessly at school because of my work on Barney, which was way beyond my age, I still found joy in it, and more importantly, I appreciated the sense of belonging it provided me.
Even now, after two decades, Gomez said she loves what she does.
The artist expressed that they are deeply content with all areas of their life currently, feeling a strong sense of accomplishment for their progress. They also mentioned that they’re in good health, feeling joyful, and experiencing tranquility.
Amid significant Oscar buzz for her latest film, the actress confessed she was ‘very confused.’
She mentioned that music will always hold a special place within her, but regretted not having the opportunity to immerse herself fully in the acting profession she originally aspired for. However, she’s been quite strategic and diligent in choosing roles that are intriguing rather than limiting herself to what others might expect from her.
She continued: ‘That’s something I get a high off of. But it was funny with Emilia, I genuinely thought it was going to be a movie that, like, came out in France.’
I couldn’t help but be taken aback by all the acclaim, given that there have been times when I’ve been turned down before I even got the chance to try out for a part.
In my experience, when I encounter situations where people might doubt my readiness due to age or other reasons, I employ a strategy: I keep my identity hidden during the auditions, allowing them to evaluate solely on my performance.
Gomez stated: ‘At times, simply expressing my desire to audition can elicit responses like, “That won’t suit our needs.” Or they might say, “We’re looking to hire unknown talents,” only to later hire someone well-known like Austin Butler. I don’t feel resentful; it’s just the reality of my situation and I accept it. It simply means I’ll keep working on projects that I hope will be captivating and distinctive.’
In an attempt to maintain some level of mystery, I occasionally submit recordings under a pseudonym. My managers might mention having a client who will be perusing the material, without explicitly revealing it’s me.
In one of the films I starred in, they reacted positively when I entered, which made me think I had messed up since they exclaimed “Ooohh.” However, I reassured them by saying, “No, no, no, no. Just let me read.” It turned out to be ‘Fundamentals of Caring,’ a sweet movie with Paul Rudd. This approach seemed to work as I ended up getting the role. She reflected that sometimes you need to perform well during auditions, like dancing.
Despite assumptions that Emilia Pérez, Gomez frequently receives movie roles, she continues to encounter doubtful casting directors and struggles with getting offers regularly.
In the future she dreams of working with Aaron Sorkin and Martin Scorsese.
She expressed a strong desire to ensure Scorsese doesn’t leave unexpectedly or retire prematurely, saying something like “I just need one more chance, I’ll be in two scenes.” She also mentioned this as a consideration. She emphasized that she doesn’t aspire to be the main star, but rather finds comfort in taking on roles that are unconventional.
