Festivus, a now-famous holiday from the show Seinfeld, wasn’t just made up for television—it was based on a real tradition celebrated by one of the show’s writers. Seinfeld has given us a lot of memorable moments and phrases, but Festivus is definitely one of the most beloved and lasting creations from the iconic comedy.
Festivus, first appearing in the ninth season of Seinfeld in the episode “The Strike,” is a unique family tradition created by Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller). He invented the holiday when his son, George (Jason Alexander), was young, and it’s been a bit of a headache ever since. Interestingly, the idea for Festivus actually came from a real person’s life!
Seinfeld Writer Dan O’Keefe’s Family Really Celebrated Festivus Every Year

The ‘Strike’ episode of Seinfeld was created by Dan O’Keefe, Alec Berg, and Jeff Schaffer. Dan O’Keefe introduced the idea of Festivus, a made-up holiday his own family had celebrated annually, as reported by the New York Times. The name ‘Festivus’ was actually coined by Dan O’Keefe’s father, Daniel O’Keefe, Sr., who said it simply came to him spontaneously.
Festivus began as a way to commemorate Daniel O’Keefe’s first date with his wife, Deborah (according to Archive). The famous phrase, “a Festivus for the rest of us,” was inspired by Daniel’s mother, Jeanette, who died in 1976, and referred to those who were still alive (as reported by the Washington Post).
O’Keefe Was Reluctant To Write About Festivus

Dan O’Keefe initially hesitated to include his family’s unique tradition in a Seinfeld episode. Interestingly, Dan wasn’t the first to tell the story – his co-writers, Alec Berg and Jeff Schaffer, actually heard about the tradition from his brother, as reported by Uproxx.
Berg and Schaffer were determined to include the story in the show, and Dan ultimately agreed. The humor comes from the fact that Dan’s personal discomfort with the holiday is mirrored in George’s dislike of Festivus. It appears the episode drew inspiration from more than just the holiday itself – it also incorporated elements of Dan’s life.
“The Strike” Remains A Holiday Classic 28 Years Later

“The Strike” is a classic episode from season 9 of Seinfeld, and many fans consider it one of the show’s best. While it’s famous for introducing Festivus, the episode also features hilarious subplots, like Kramer (Michael Richards) briefly working at a bagel shop after being on strike for twelve years.
Elaine loses a card for free sandwiches to a man she’s interested in, and Jerry starts dating a woman whose appearance changes dramatically with different lighting. Each of these situations would be funny on its own, but combining them with the holiday of Festivus creates a truly memorable episode of Seinfeld.
