Seiko Expands Prospex and Presage Lineups With PADI Collaboration and Urushi Craftsmanship

Summary

  • Seiko unveils three new timepieces, including two diver watches and a classic Urushi lacquered model
  • All are available for pre-order, with prices ranging from £560 – £1,500 GBP (approx $755 – $2,024 USD)

Seiko recently unveiled three new timepieces for its Prospex and Presage lineups, with one standout piece being the SPB501J1 – a collaboration between Seiko and PADI, the world’s leading scuba diving training organization. This special edition watch, inspired by Seiko’s first-ever diving watch from 1965 (the 62MAS), comes in at 40mm and boasts an impressive water resistance of 300 meters, all thanks to its in-house 6R55 automatic movement. The dial features a vibrant green shade, with intricate patterns that mimic the ocean’s surface as viewed underwater. As a bonus, a matching green strap made from recycled fishing nets is included.

A new model added to the Prospex collection is the SRPL51K1 4R Compact Mechanical Diver’s Watch, which blends characteristics from two well-liked Seiko designs: the slanted lugs of the “Shogun” and the crown design of the “Samurai,” as well as the straight lines from both layouts. This watch comes in a Cobalt Blue color, boasting a case that’s nearly 42mm in diameter, with a sleek build and a date window positioned at 4.5 o’clock, accompanied by pointed hands.

To wrap things up, I can’t help but be captivated by the SPB499J1 from the Presage Classic Series – the newest addition to our collection. This beauty is a modern take on the brand’s inaugural pocket watch, ‘The Timekeeper’, first introduced in 1895. The dial, crafted with traditional Urushi lacquer, contrasts beautifully under the double-curved sapphire crystal glass and is encircled by a rail track design. Gold-tone Roman numerals, reminiscent of baton indices, add a touch of elegance.

Designed to be timeless, this Presage Classic model graces my wrist with a sustainably sourced black leather strap. Powering this watch is the in-house 6R5H automatic movement, featuring a 24-hour sub-dial at 6 o’clock, boasting a three-day power reserve, and boasting 100 meters of water resistance.

On Seiko’s UK website, you can now pre-order any of the three models available. The Cobalt Blue diver’s watch with model number SRPL51K1 is priced at approximately £560 GBP or around $755 USD. In contrast, the PADI Special Edition and the Presage Classic in Urushi Black are both selling for a higher price of about £1,500 GBP, which equates to roughly $2,024 USD.
