SEGA Has Sold Amplitude, Maker of Humankind
As a long-time strategy game enthusiast, I’ve followed Amplitude Studios’ journey with great interest. Their games like Endless Space 2 and Humankind have been staples in my gaming library, providing me with countless hours of engaging and thought-provoking gameplay.
Sega has sold Amplitude Studios, the French developer behind 4X strategy game Humankind.
In their recently disclosed financial report, Sega revealed that they have transferred ownership of Amplitude through a management buyout process.
Sega then issued the following statement (via VGC):
Today, Sega Europe has declared that it is selling Amplitude Studios after a buyout led by top management and staff at the Parisian studio. This change will allow Amplitude to revert back to its initial form as an independent entity, marking the end of the structural changes within Sega’s European operations.
After a time of detailed discussions between Sega Europe and Amplitude, they’ve mutually decided to go separate ways. Now as an independent studio again, Amplitude will concentrate on the projects it’s currently developing and expanding its own franchises. On the other hand, Sega will carry on strengthening its collection of Japanese and Western intellectual properties.
In 2016, Sega Europe purchased Amplitude Studios, since then they have collaborated on releasing grand strategy games such as Endless Space 2 and Humankind. Also, Endless Dungeon, a sequel to the 2014 indie hit Dungeon of the Endless, was developed together under their partnership.
Although Amplitude Studios is now independently operated, rather than being under the Sega umbrella, they will still collaborate closely to facilitate a seamless transfer of services and operations. This collaboration aims to minimize any disruption for Amplitude employees and maintain uninterrupted gameplay for players of Amplitude’s video games.
Last year, I got my hands on Endless Dungeon, the latest masterpiece from the studio, which was available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms. What a thrilling journey it was!
