Seeing The Missing Person Milk Cartons Rob Lowe Made For The West Wing Cast When He Got Written Off Wasn’t On My Bingo Card
Approximately two decades following its final broadcast, The West Wing continues to be one of the most frequently rewatched TV shows and consistently sparks calls for more episodes from Aaron Sorkin. Over time, numerous analyses and backstage tales have emerged from the cast who portrayed Jed Bartlet’s senior team. However, I must admit that I was taken aback when Rob Lowe shared the “Missing Person” milk carton he reportedly handed out to his co-stars upon leaving the series.
Rob Lowe was one of the primary stars and undeniably the most prominent name among the main cast when the TV series inspired by “The American President” debuted in 1999. He portrayed Sam Seaborn, a crucial figure within the White House apparatus. However, after several seasons, conflicts behind the scenes led to Lowe departing “The West Wing” near the end of Season 4. But just how rocky was it for the actor? To get a glimpse into his experiences, take a look at his TikTok posts.

Initially, I must admit I’m quite intrigued by this video. Could it be that Rob Lowe is organizing a garage sale? Or perhaps his garage serves as a museum filled with TV and movie memorabilia spanning over 40 years of his illustrious career? Does he casually stumble upon these nostalgic artifacts amidst the clutter, just like discovering an old milk carton?
Let me tell you about something else that caught my attention – this unique milk carton. I must say, it’s quite petty, but in an amusing way that I can’t help but admire. Rob Lowe took things to a whole new level by creating a milk carton with his own image and then sending it out to the entire cast and crew of the show. It’s hard to believe the nerve he showed!
He said in the video:
Initially, there were some challenges on the production. At one stage, it seemed as though I might be excluded from the program. I didn’t have many responsibilities, so I created these items and shared them with everyone associated with the show – the network, studio, producers, everyone. It was a carton of milk that I sent to all of them.
Afterward, the milk carton provided details such as his height, weight, and the date he was last spotted (in the Christmas episode of 2002). Quite clear, wouldn’t you agree, coming from your deputy communications director?
Indeed, it seems questionable if Rob Lowe can rightly claim he was “written off” the show since it wasn’t a sudden and unexplained departure like Mandy’s. While it’s true that his character had less screen time in Season 4, the circumstances surrounding his departure were likely more complex than just being written out of the script.
As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve come to realize that sometimes financial disputes can overshadow the magic of on-screen camaraderie. In this case, it appears the actor’s departure was influenced by such an issue. He elucidated this in his book titled “Stories I Only Tell My Friends,” revealing a strain in relationships with his co-stars when he sought a raise that producers declined to grant.

If you’re a fan of shows like “The West Wing” and looking to save some cash on your next binge-watching session, I’d suggest going for HBO Max’s annual plans. With these, you can enjoy savings up to 16%! They offer three plans to choose from, with the most economical one starting at just $9.99 a month. However, if you’re interested in bundling HBO Max with Disney Plus and Hulu, you could save even more, as it starts from only $16.99 a month. So, consider this deal to keep your streaming costs low yet entertainment high!
As a movie critic, I’d rephrase it like this: In my opinion, Rob Lowe is rumored to have joined “The West Wing” at an impressive $70,000 per episode, while the rest of the principal cast earned significantly less. When the show skyrocketed in popularity, it was reported that the other actors’ wages were matched to Lowe’s figure. However, when negotiations for a salary increase failed, Lowe supposedly stated that he no longer fit within the narrative, and Sam Seaborn’s character departed from the series.
Looking back on everything that transpired two decades ago, it’s heartening to know that we can all share a chuckle about it today. It appears that Rob Lowe finds himself amused by his past antics, which speaks volumes about his ability to laugh at himself.
Experience more of Sam Seaborn’s days and the ones that followed by subscribing to HBO Max and streaming ‘The West Wing’. Soon, you’ll get to see Allison Janney team up with her former co-star Bradley Whitford again, as he joins ‘The Diplomat’ in its third season, playing Janney’s character’s husband. The first two seasons are available for streaming on Netflix.
