The first trailer is out for *Amadeus*, a new historical drama featuring Will Sharpe and Paul Bettany, which is set to premiere later this year.
The new series is inspired by Peter Shaffer’s 1979 play, telling the story of the intense, largely imagined competition between composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, portrayed by Sharpe, and Antonio Salieri, played by Bettany.
The short preview offers a glimpse of the story to come, featuring the resentful Salieri contemplating: “This awful being played so beautifully. To tear down the man is to tear down God.”
What to Read Next
If you know the story, you’ll expect the main character to act very recklessly. And, as the trailer suggests, the actor playing him, Sharpe, seems to be embracing that wildness with his portrayal of Mozart.
This story was famously made into an Academy Award-winning movie in 1984, and now it’s been completely updated. The new version is being called a stunning and fresh take on a tale of brilliance, competition, and revenge.

The story follows 25-year-old Amadeus as he comes to Vienna in the 1700s. No longer a young talent, he’s looking for the freedom to create his own music. There, he meets two important people: Constanze Weber, who will become his devoted wife, and Antonio Salieri, a deeply religious composer working for the court.
Despite facing personal struggles, a tarnished reputation, and doubt from the traditional court, Amadeus’ incredible talent continues to grow, causing Salieri increasing distress as he perceives it as a gift from a higher power.
Okay, so this is getting intense. Apparently, this guy Amadeus isn’t just a musical genius, he’s a total danger to everything the other guy, Salieri, cares about – his skills, what people think of him, even his belief in God! Salieri’s basically decided he *has* to ruin Amadeus’ life.
Okay, so this story starts with two guys just competing in their field, but it quickly spirals into this crazy, decades-long obsession. Like, thirty years of intense rivalry that gets *really* personal. It all ends with someone confessing to murder and then trying to tie their name to Mozart’s forever – it’s a wild ride!

I’m really excited about this new drama! It’s written by Joe Barton, who I loved for his work on *Giri/Haji*, and he’s teaming up with George Sharpe again. Plus, the cast is fantastic – Gabrielle Creevy, Rory Kinnear, and Jessica Alexander are all in it, which is a huge draw for me!
This five-part drama tells the story of a famous composer’s incredible success and tragic decline. It will air on Sky Television in December, and the specific premiere date will be revealed soon.
