See Sunfyre’s awesome saddle from House of the Dragon
As a devoted fan of the enchanting world of Westeros, I’ve been captivated by the intricate details that breathe life into House of the Dragon. The craftsmanship behind each element, from the grandest sets to the tiniest props, is nothing short of extraordinary.
Every scene in HBO’s lavish prequel series, House of the Dragon, requires an incredible amount of effort. This labor extends beyond the actors, directors, and writers. The costume team meticulously creates each article of clothing worn by the actors, the art department constructs the sets, a legion of special effects artists bring the dragons to life, and much more. While most of this work is unnoticed during viewing, it’s all of exceptional quality and worthy of admiration.
This is the dragon saddle, crafted by Aidan Pitchford and Sean Schofield. It’s the very one that King Aegon II Targaryen uses when he soars on his dragon, Sunfyre, in the most impressive episode of the season titled “The Red Dragon and the Gold,” during their battles.
It’s remarkably attractive, given its brief appearance on screen. HBO might have opted for a simpler version, but instead, they chose to go for the high-quality option.
I recently shared some images on Instagram that, unfortunately, didn’t get much attention during the show, following the usual tradition set by Pitchford. Here’s hoping more people can appreciate it now. As he put it, this piece is certainly “cool.” I can’t help but wonder if anyone had the chance to take it home with them.
Apart from Pitchford and Schofield handling the sculpting, damon.abba was responsible for the leatherwork and assembly, while Pitchford, Brandon James Coomes, and Kate Murray painted the saddle. Fingers crossed that we’ll catch a glimpse of this saddle (or maybe a worn, charred version) again in the series. Despite repeated mentions in season 2 of House of the Dragonthat Sunfyre perished at the Battle of Rook’s Rest, his body was never shown, and there is still much more for him to accomplish according to George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, so we harbor some skepticism about his demise.
