Channel 5 has shared several new photos of Martin Clunes playing Huw Edwards in its upcoming drama, Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards.
Martin Clunes, known for his roles in Doc Martin and Manhunt, stars as the former BBC News presenter in a new two-part drama. It begins airing on Channel 5 on Tuesday, March 24th at 9pm, and both episodes will also be available to stream on My5.
The series tells the story of how a television personality abused his power to groom a 17-year-old. It follows the newsreader’s secret life as it unravels, ultimately leading to his conviction for serious crimes and his resignation from public life.
In September 2022, Huw Edwards, a highly respected newsreader, had the significant responsibility of announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II. A year later, details of his online behavior became public.
In 2023, The Sun newspaper reported that a BBC presenter had paid someone young for explicit photos. The BBC immediately suspended the presenter, who was later identified as Huw Edwards by his wife, Vicky Flind. This led to a police investigation.

Between December 2020 and April 2022, Edwards was accused of creating indecent images of children. He admitted guilt at Westminster Magistrates Court and received a suspended sentence.
This drama relies heavily on interviews with people directly involved, and features exclusive details from The Sun‘s investigation of Edwards.

When the series was first announced in January, Ben Frow, the head of content at Channel 5, described it as a significant and disturbing story about a powerful and trusted individual who abused their position.
We delve into the personal stories behind the news by speaking with the people directly involved and those who investigated the case. This unique program is a first for the channel, bringing together both our factual and drama teams in a close partnership.

I’m really excited about this series! It’s directed by Michael Samuels, who I know from his work on things like The Windermere Children and Any Human Heart – both fantastic! The writing is by Mark Burt, who wrote The Trial, which was gripping, and Angie Daniell is producing. She’s done some great stuff too, including A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story and Vigil, so I have high hopes!
Martin Clunes, famous for playing the grumpy doctor in Doc Martin, has recently become known for portraying challenging characters based on real people. He notably played detective Colin Sutton in the ITV drama Manhunt, and also appears as Mr. Earnshaw in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards airs Tuesday 24 March at 9pm on Channel 5.
