Section 31 director says the movie is a great place to start for those who've never seen Star Trek

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who’s spent countless hours navigating the final frontier, I must say that the news of Section 31 hitting Paramount+ next year has piqued my curiosity. While some traditionalists may balk at the deviation from the established lore, I find myself intrigued by the prospect of a self-contained movie that doesn’t require prior knowledge of the franchise.

In a year, Section 31, a movie delving into the covert agency performing tasks beyond Starfleet’s capabilities, will debut on Paramount+. The initial trailer has sparked criticism from Star Trek enthusiasts who feel the film strays too far from traditional Star Trek themes. However, director Olatunde Osunsanmi believes that Section 31 can be enjoyed by viewers unfamiliar with any of the Star Trek franchise’s episodes.

During an interview with CinemaBlend, as reported by Trekmovie, the director referred to it as a standalone cinematic experience.

“You can hop right in. If this is your first Star Trek that you’ve ever seen, it is a great way to start. It is its own contained movie.”

Section 31 originates from Starfleet Intelligence, a part that may be difficult to grasp if you’re new to Star Trek, as it might require watching multiple episodes, especially those that delve into its workings and history. However, the film might provide an introduction to this aspect for beginners interested in science fiction.

Undoubtedly, Starfleet will take center stage in the upcoming movie, and while the exact hierarchy may not be spelled out, viewers should follow along. As one of the film’s leading actors, Sam Richardson, puts it, it seems that Section 31 still maintains a command structure; however, this chain of command appears somewhat worn or outdated.

“The other iterations of Trek are very naval. It’s a ship that has a hierarchy and protocol and chain of command, whereas this ragtag bunch… they have all these things, but it’s a little bit murkier. And so, they also kind of let us play with that and improvise a little bit, while still sticking to Craig’s script, a brilliant script.”

Many people are excitedly anticipating this movie, and although I’m crossing my fingers that they won’t be let down, I’ll keep my expectations in check with a touch of optimism. However, if someone has never watched Star Trek before, I would suggest starting with Star Trek: Prodigy as a fantastic introduction point.
