Sebastián Yatra is livin’ on a prayer

To Sebastian Yatra, a miracle isn’t necessarily something extravagant; it could be as simple as a child’s grin, a perfectly brewed cup of tea, or rain on a bright day.

“You find [miracles] in everything,” said Yatra in a video call from his Miami home.

The seemingly insignificant instances served as inspiration for the idea behind the Colombian artist’s fourth studio album, titled “Milagro”. This work was unveiled on May 16th and required three years of dedication to its completion. It represents a more introspective phase in the life of this pop romantic.

Yatra mentioned that many of these songs have a deep emotional impact on him, and they’ve provided comfort during various challenging periods he has experienced over the last few years.

The title of the album signifies a fresh, spiritual phase in Yatra’s personal journey. His rise to fame began with his 2016 breakthrough hit “Traicionera,” a Latin-EDM track, and the 2017 collaboration with Carlos Vives on the vallenato song “Robarte un Beso.” The titles of his previous albums have incorporated mystical themes, such as “Mantra” (2018), “Fantasía” (2019), and “Dharma” (2022).

Yatra shared that ever since their teenage years, they’ve had a profound and deep-rooted relationship with a higher power, which they refer to as an inexplicable force or being – whatever it may be that guided our existence.

In my perspective, the central idea of this project shines brightly in the gentle gospel tunes of “Milagro,” particularly in the song “Amen.” This tune underscores the potency of faith during challenging times and encapsulates the core values that drive this project.

As a movie lover, I find this method an incredible means of expressing my spiritual perspective and the profound affection and reverence I hold for individuals across the globe.

The singer showcases his lyrical prowess across the entire album, particularly in tender love songs such as “Milagro” and “Segundo Amor.” Additionally, you’ll find upbeat Caribbean tracks scattered throughout, including the well-liked merengue hit “Vagabundo,” a collaboration with Manuel Turizo and Beéle, and “2AM,” a reggaeton duet with Bad Gyal that reinterprets Dido’s 1999 song “Thank You.

In the same vein as many albums by Yatra, there’s a place for heartache too. I pour out my longing and envy in tracks like “La Pelirroja” and “Disco Rayado.” However, this pain doesn’t signify that all love is beyond reach; it carries a tinge of sadness infused with optimism, as I expressed, “[There’s] a lot of sadness, but also [a] sadness with hope.

At the age of 30, I find myself nestled within a serene sanctuary, absorbing both the world’s breathtaking wonders and its unavoidable hardships. “The subtle ebbs and flows of life are simply part of the experience,” I mused. How could I not cherish this unexpected voyage when it has steered me towards enriching detours along the way?

In the year 2021, he sang a heartfelt rendition of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ballad “Dos Oruguitas” for the animated movie musical “Encanto”. This song was not only included in the film but also nominated for ‘Original Song’ at the 94th Academy Awards. This remarkable achievement has left an indelible mark on countless young lives, reminding him of the impact that songs like “The Little Mermaid’s” tunes or “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” had when he was growing up. As Yatra put it, “I can only fully grasp this experience by reflecting on those moments from my own childhood.

This past autumn, I stepped onto the Broadway stage for the first time, donning the slick attorney persona of Billy Flynn in the enduring jazz musical “Chicago.” At first glance, it seemed like a distant dream for a kid who grew up in Miami, but my role as Troy Bolton in our middle school’s production of “High School Musical” hinted at what was yet to come.

There was quite a leap, going from high school productions to making my debut as the main actor on Broadway,” Yatra mentioned. “I’d love to repeat that experience.

Approaching life like a game, it appears Yatra feels prepared to face whatever challenges may arise, and he shared, “I find that perspective helps me avoid taking myself too seriously.
