Sebastian Stan is reportedly joining the cast of The Batman – Part II, and it seems he might play a character similar to his famous role as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel movies. While nothing is official yet, rumors suggest Stan is being considered for a major villainous role, and many believe he’ll be playing Harvey Dent, also known as Two-Face – a possibility hinted at by his stylist.
Casting Stan as Harvey Dent draws comparisons to his previous role as The Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a film widely considered one of the strongest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans are hoping The Batman – Part II can be as good as, or even better than, that sequel. This raises the question of what connects the characters of The Winter Soldier and Two-Face, and how the upcoming Batman film might share similarities with Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Similarities Between The Winter Soldier and Two-Face

DC Entertainment
As a movie buff, I’ve always found the parallels between Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier) and Harvey Dent (Two-Face) fascinating. They both started as allies to the hero – Captain America and Batman, respectively – but tragically became villains, and their fall really drives the hero’s story. What’s even more compelling is their broken mental states. Bucky was essentially a mind-controlled assassin thanks to HYDRA, while Two-Face suffered from a split personality, letting a coin flip decide his actions. It’s a really similar tragic arc for both characters, honestly.
While Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, initially seemed like the villain in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the story is really about his journey to make amends. Both in the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bucky hasn’t been a long-term enemy of Captain America; he eventually becomes an ally and fights alongside the heroes, which is how he’s best known.
Two-Face is one of Batman’s most well-known enemies. While comics have often expanded on Harvey Dent’s past as a politician before he became a villain, he’s generally portrayed as a tragic figure. Even when Harvey briefly manages to control his Two-Face personality, he always falls back into it. Matt Reeves, the director, could potentially give his version of Harvey Dent a happy ending, which is more easily done in a film than a comic book. However, this raises the question of whether the actor, Stan, would want to play a character so similar to the one he’s been playing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over ten years.
Can ‘The Batman – Part II’ Be as Good as ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’?

Marvel Studios
Though seemingly very different, both The Batman – Part II and Captain America: The Winter Soldier represent significant shifts in their respective series. The Batman – Part II aims to maintain the realistic, crime-focused tone established in The Batman and continued in The Penguin. Similarly, The Winter Soldier moved away from the style of Captain America: The First Avenger under new directors, the Russo brothers. While The Winter Soldier featured intense physical fights, The Batman – Part II probably won’t pit Batman against a physically imposing foe like the Winter Soldier did against Captain America; Harvey Dent / Two-Face is likely to be a different kind of challenge.

The possibility of The Court of Owls appearing in The Batman – Part II is drawing comparisons to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Like HYDRA in the Marvel movies – a secret group that quietly took control of organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D. after World War II – The Court of Owls is a hidden society that has been secretly pulling strings in Gotham for years. Interestingly, Sebastian Stan could end up appearing in two superhero sequels where the hero wears a mask and battles a secretive organization, and Stan’s character would again play someone who was once an ally but becomes an enemy.
