Sebastian Stan explains how A Different Man was a “unique experience”
As a seasoned gamer of films, I can confidently say that Sebastian Stan’s latest venture, “A Different Man,” is not just another movie; it’s an immersive, transformative journey. The storyline, the performance, and the filming experience are all so unique that they make this film stand out from the crowd.
In the cinemas once more, Sebastian Stan delivers an outstanding performance in the gripping new thriller titled “A Different Man“. True to its name, this filming process proved unique for him.
In the film penned and helmed by Aaron Schimberg, we follow Stan’s character, Edward – an aspiring actor – as he undergoes a significant physical transformation through a medical process. However, this procedure turns into a horrifying ordeal when Edward becomes fixated on regaining what was taken from him.
Speaking with Digital Spy on the occasion of the UK’s release of “A Different Man” today (October 4), Stan mentioned that each film demands unique strategies, yet this project demanded a total shift in his methodology.
He strives to maintain flexibility when he can, yet he feels confident enough to know certain strategies that suit him well. In applying these methods, each situation is distinct, he remembered, as this particular encounter was an entirely unique and unlike any other experience.
Due to the detailed nature of the script and our unique filming approach, which involved lengthy shots and film rather than digital, our main focus was ensuring we were thoroughly prepared. It was much like composing a piece of music where every element needed to flow seamlessly for us to capture it perfectly.
In the show “A Different Man“, Stan’s character Edward portrays him living his life prior to undergoing surgery due to neurofibromatosis. To depict this, Stan donned prosthetics and moved about New York City wearing them.
The experience changed both the way he approached the role and also understand the character more.
He clarified, “Whenever you put on a mask, whether it’s a disguise or not, I believe it influences you. It alters your character.” He added, “Interestingly, there’s a sense of liberation in that because you’re no longer looking at yourself directly.
As a gamer, I can tell you firsthand that nothing compares to the raw, immersive feel of games that don’t just play out like movies. It’s eye-opening and deeply enlightening to dive into these experiences, because let’s face it, we live in a world that’s often unpredictable, harsh, and sometimes heartlessly ignorant.
As a keen observer, I often find that people, myself included, aren’t particularly skilled at weaving elaborate webs of deceit. We all have been taught etiquette and picked up social cues to some degree; it’s just that not everyone uses these skills consistently.
A Different Man is out now in UK cinemas.
