As a dedicated fan who has followed Coronation Street for decades, this sudden departure of Sean Wilson, the talented actor behind Martin Platt, leaves me feeling rather crestfallen. I remember his first appearance on the cobbles like it was yesterday, and to see him leave after such a long and illustrious run feels like losing an old friend.
As per reports, Sean Wilson from Coronation Street was called to the main office prior to his departure due to personal matters.
As a lifestyle advisor, I’d put it like this: Just recently, I found myself stepping away from my role as Martin Platt in the popular soap opera, due to personal matters that require my full attention. A few weeks ago, you might have seen me holding scripts and striking poses, but life has taken an unexpected turn for me now.
In October, Sean was slated to return to his character Martin, coinciding with Gail’s farewell performance on the set, as her portrayer, Helen Worth (age 73), is preparing to bid adieu to the cobbles.
Currently, none of his scenes are set to be broadcasted, as the bosses are hurriedly revising Gail’s entire exit narrative due to her departure.
According to The Sun, the actor attended a meeting with superiors who later did not provide an explanation for their actions to his fellow cast members.

A source told the publication: ‘It has come as a complete and utter shock to everyone – and his sudden exit has rocked everyone involved with Corrie. Sean was loving his time on the show, and he was very popular on set.
He shot many scenes with numerous cast members, but unexpectedly, he received a call from the main office. Later on, it became known that he wouldn’t be coming back or his scenes wouldn’t air, but no reasons were given.
Without a doubt, this is a significant setback for managers as they need to come up with a fresh, enchanting and uplifting conclusion for Helen. However, they are optimistic and believe they can deliver an exceptional outcome that will delight viewers.
An ITV spokesperson told TopMob: ‘Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.’
Sean’s representative informed the media outlet, “We won’t provide any additional comments or statements from either Sean or myself.”
For twenty years, starting in 1985, Sean portrayed Martin. Then, in 2018, he and his family moved to New Zealand. Before their relocation, he stopped by Weatherfield one last time to bid farewell to David, who was saddened that his father was leaving the country.
It was verified in July that Sean would once again take up the character of Martin Platt, which was a part of Gail’s farewell from the Coronation Street set, where she had been for 50 years.
When Sean received the scripts for filming, he expressed: “I was thrilled to return to Coronation Street once more, this time playing a part in writing out Helen’s character.”

He mentioned that we will get another chance to reconnect with Martin and Gail within a few months, as the narrative progresses.
Enjoying playing as Martin from the very start, it feels like I’m picking up right where I left off – an event that undoubtedly will create some unexpected turbulence within the Platt household.
“It feels as cozy as putting on a well-worn sweater from your closet’s depths… I’m eagerly anticipating reconnecting with my television kin.”
