Sean 'Diddy' Combs hit with $100-million default judgment in inmate's sexual assault suit

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a keen eye for detail and a knack for unraveling complex narratives, I must say that this latest chapter in the saga of Sean “Diddy” Combs leaves me both astounded and slightly amused. The twists and turns of this tale are reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster, complete with allegations, lawsuits, and high-stakes financial decisions.

A Michigan inmate who filed a lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs for alleged sexual assault was awarded $100 million by a judge on Monday.

Judge Anna Marie Anzalone in Lenawee County circuit court has ruled that starting October, Sean Combs (also known as Diddy or Puff Daddy) will be required to pay $10 million per month for a period of 10 months to accuser Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith. This decision is part of an agreement reached during a virtual hearing on Monday, which Combs missed. The settlement was made by default.

51-year-old Cardello-Smith is presently imprisoned at the Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility due to multiple charges of criminal sexual offenses, as per a Michigan inmate database. In June, he filed a civil lawsuit claiming that Combs, aged 54, drugged and sexually violated him while Cardello-Smith was employed in the restaurant and hospitality industry during a Detroit party in 1997, based on reports from Detroit Metro Times, which refers to court documents.

According to reports from TMZ, Cardello-Smith claims that Combs inappropriately touched him on his left hip and attempted to give him a drugged drink. After accepting the drink, Cardello-Smith says he passed out. Upon regaining consciousness, he alleges that he saw Combs engaged in an intimate act with a woman. The lawsuit states that Combs later said, “I did this to you too,” which is attributed to the rapper.

In a statement to The Times, attorney Marc Agnifilo stated about Cardello-Smith: “This individual is a man who’s been found guilty as a felon and sexual offender, serving time for 14 counts of sexual assault and kidnapping spanning over 26 years. It appears he has fabricated legal proceedings from prison against Mr. Combs, whom he claims to have served with a lawsuit. However, Mr. Combs denies any knowledge of him, and eagerly anticipates swift dismissal of this court case.

It’s unclear if Cardello-Smith effectively or even served Combs regarding this particular lawsuit.

Cardello-Smith, the individual who brought a lawsuit against Diddy, couldn’t be reached by The Times as he chose not to have legal representation for his case.

Cardello-Smith is an individual who educates himself on civil and criminal laws, and he’s renowned for his prolonged efforts of testing the judicial system through civil court cases. As per Detroit Metro Times, from 2020 to 2024, Cardello-Smith has been a primary plaintiff in over thirty legal disputes. Court papers reveal that some of these lawsuits involve prisoner rights issues.

Before initiating this lawsuit, Cardello-Smith had previously been convicted three times in Minnesota’s criminal court system. These convictions followed either plea agreements or no contest pleas. The charges against him ranged from third-degree criminal sexual conduct to kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct during the commission of a felony. His latest sentence, issued in May 2019, mandates a term of between 17½ to 35 years.

5 incidents were committed between September and October of 1997, which was also the year that the incident involving Combs is said to have taken place. According to the inmate records, Cardello-Smith could potentially be released as early as July 2036, with a latest possible release date being May 2086 when he would be 113 years old.

Previously this week, the Los Angeles mansion belonging to rapper Sean Combs, who experienced a raid by Homeland Security in March, was put up for sale with an asking price of $61 million, according to Page Six. This luxury property is now being offered for sale after a decade since Combs bought it for $40 million and following several legal disputes.

After accusations of sexual assault, sex trafficking, and other misconduct emerged towards the end of last year, Combs has chosen to stay out of the public spotlight. Singers like Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura, producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, and former model Crystal McKinney are among several individuals who have filed civil lawsuits against the rapper.
