Sean Bean’s period drama cancelled after 1 season
Sean Bean’s period drama Shardlake has been cancelled after just one season.
In the four-part series inspired by C J Sansom’s novels, we follow the story of Matthew Shardlake, a sheltered lawyer portrayed by Arthur Hughes. He is tasked by Thomas Cromwell, played by Mark Addy, to solve the murder of a commissioner in a secluded town.
According to the summary, Cromwell travels with an individual named Jack Barak (portrayed by Anthony Boyle). Upon meeting, they encounter resistance, apprehension, and a sense of unease from the monks. These monks are protective of their way of life and seem determined to take any measures necessary to safeguard their order.
In May 2024, the Disney+ series made its debut, however, it has been announced by Variety that there won’t be a follow-up season.
A Disney+ spokesperson expressed gratitude towards Stephen Butchard for adapting C J Sansom’s cherished novel for the screen, as well as the exceptional cast headed by Arthur Hughes, the crew, and our collaborative partners The Forge and Runaway Fridge. We eagerly look forward to potential future collaborations with all involved in these productions.
In addition to Shardlake, the cast consisted of Babou Ceesay, Paul Kaye, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Peter Firth, Matthew Steer, Brian Vernel, Irfan Shamji, David Pearse, Miles Barrow, Mike Noble, and Kimberley Nixon. In simpler terms, these individuals also played important roles in the series alongside Shardlake.
In their three-star review, Digital Spy commented that the Tudor series started off slowly, stating: “The series doesn’t gain momentum until the second episode, and since there are only four episodes, this initial phase of setup is quite substantial.
In addition, Shardlake isn’t the sole British production being dropped by the streaming platform. The comedy series Extraordinary has also been canceled and won’t have another season.
The program that depicted the lives of two unruly roommates in a universe with extraordinary abilities ran for two seasons before being terminated. This brings an end to the critically acclaimed series, leaving viewers hanging with a major plot twist unresolved.
