Sean Bean’s forgotten ’70s-set British crime drama described as “turbulently dark” gets Netflix home
In the United Kingdom, the crime period drama starring Sean Bean and Andrew Garfield, titled “Red Riding“, has secured a new platform for streaming.
The 2009 television series, consisting of three long-form episodes, tells fictional stories about the investigation into a notorious serial killer called the Yorkshire Ripper, who caused fear in the region throughout the ’70s and ’80s due to his numerous murders.
Starting 18th July in the UK, you can stream “Red Riding” on Netflix. This gripping series was penned by Tony Grisoni and is based on the book series by David Peace with the same title.

The story unfolds in and around cities like Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, and various parts of West Yorkshire, with an unconventional sequence of happenings.
In the first episode, alongside Bean and Garfield (portraying John Dawson, a real estate developer, and Eddie Dunford, a reporter), Rebecca Hall plays the mother of a tragically murdered schoolgirl. Daniel Mays, Michelle Dockery, and David Morrissey are also part of this series.
One IMDb user characterized the show as a “powerfully dark and fluidly unfolding three-part miniseries,” while another viewer found it “unsettling” and admitted that the final episode left them feeling “uneasy.” Nevertheless, they praised the “remarkable acting by the cast.
Another individual expressed that The Red Riding Trilogy is incredibly complex and almost impossible to understand, making it one of the densest works they’ve encountered.
In a striking manner, both the actors and the creative team have produced exceptional pieces of art. Although there’s an overwhelming sense of darkness, there’s also a captivating, eerie charm about it – a sort of dark elegance, or beauty found in fear.
If it seems like something you’d enjoy, you can start streaming all the episodes on Netflix in about a week’s time.
Red Riding starts streaming on Netflix in the UK on 18 July.
