A fresh take on the classic story of Robin Hood has arrived! The new series is streaming on MGM+, starring Jack Patten (from NCIS: Sydney) as Robin Hood and Lauren McQueen (Outlander: Blood of My Blood) as Marian.
Sean Bean plays the Sheriff of Nottingham in the show. Though he’s famous for playing villains in films like GoldenEye, Patriot Games, and Snowpiercer, he aimed to portray this character in a new and unique way.
Jonathan English, co-creator of the new show, told Radio Times they aimed to portray the Sheriff as a nuanced character, moving away from the usual one-dimensional villain often associated with the Sheriff of Nottingham.

We aimed to create a multifaceted character who’s conflicted. He’s dedicated to both enforcing the law and preserving Norman traditions, but he’s also burdened by his duties as sheriff and the challenges of raising a rebellious daughter.
“Sean just brought so much complexity and greyness to all of that.”

As a fan, it’s so cool to hear that the creators, including John Glenn, really poured their hearts into developing the Sheriff character. They wanted someone totally fresh and unique, and apparently, Michael Bean wasn’t just perfect for the role – he actually helped shape it even further! It’s amazing how an actor can bring that extra something to a character.
You know, what I always loved about the casting for this project was the decision to go with actors who weren’t huge stars for Robin and Marion. It’s tough to convince anyone to take a chance on unknowns – everyone usually wants established names – but thankfully Lionsgate and MGM+ really believed in that vision and supported it.

We created a really distinctive take on the Sheriff of Nottingham, and we believed a strong actor in that role would help balance out casting some lesser-known performers.
Honestly, being on set with someone like Rowan Atkinson was amazing. Me and the other younger actors all felt super lucky to be working alongside such a legend. It really made the whole experience special.
He explained that they were fantastic leaders who paved the way with their talent and kindness. Both he and his colleague learned a great deal from them, not just as actors, but as people.
Robin Hood is available on Prime Video, with an MGM+ subscription.
