Sean Bean brings new take to a classic “typical baddie” character in this reinvented period drama

A fresh take on the Robin Hood legend has arrived on MGM+, launching November with Jack Patten (from NCIS: Sydney) starring as Robin Hood and Lauren McQueen (Outlander: Blood of My Blood) as Marian.

I was really surprised to see Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham! He’s usually the guy you love to hate – I mean, he’s played villains in stuff like GoldenEye, Patriot Games, and even Snowpiercer – but he said he wanted to do something different with this role, give the Sheriff a bit more depth. It’s cool to see him try a new take on a bad guy.

Jonathan English, co-creator of the new show, told Radio Times they aimed to create a Sheriff of Nottingham who wasn’t simply a villain. They wanted him to be a more complicated and nuanced character.

We aimed to create a deeply conflicted character—one who’s caught between enforcing the law and preserving Norman traditions, all while juggling the demands of being sheriff, policing Nottingham, and dealing with his difficult daughter. Sean really captured that internal struggle and brought a lot of nuance to the role.

John Glenn, one of the show’s creators, explained they dedicated a lot of effort to developing the Sheriff character, aiming for something unique. He added that not only did Sean Bean perfectly embody the role, but his involvement also brought additional benefits to the show.

We always aimed to find relatively unknown actors for the roles of Robin and Marion, which was difficult. Typically, studios prefer established stars, but Lionsgate and MGM+ were really on board with our vision for fresh faces.

We developed a really distinctive take on the Sheriff of Nottingham, and we believed a strong, well-known actor in that role would balance out casting less-established talent.

Patten explained that he and the other younger actors felt fortunate to be working with experienced professionals like Bean.

He explained that they were inspiring leaders who were also incredibly talented and kind people, and that both he and his colleague learned a great deal from working with them.

Robin Hood is available on Prime Video, with an MGM+ subscription.
